Beattie among Toronto's Supplemental Draft picks

TORONTO — Toronto FC made full use of the Supplemental Draft on Tuesday, selecting four players to possibly add to their ranks.

University of Wisconsin-Green Bay’s Jimmy Banks, Northern Kentucky’s Steven Beattie, Michigan State’s Spencer Thompson and High Point University’s Scott Rojo will try out and be evaluated to see if they fit into the club’s new philosophy under Aron Winter.

“These are four players who have shown good potential,” said director of player development Paul Mariner. “We will evaluate them and see where they fit into our plans as we move forward towards the new season.”

Mariner said in the past that all drafted players will be given an equal opportunity to make the club regardless of what round they are drafted in.

“Past experience tells me [late picks] can be whatever they want to be,” he said last week.

Moments after being selected, Beattie tweeted that it was the best day of his life.

“Just got drafted by Toronto FC,” he wrote. “[A] dream come true! Love the city. I have visited a couple of times.”

Toronto open preseason training camp next week in Turkey.
