Toronto, Philadelphia announce international friendlies

Former MLSer Stuart Holden has showed well for Bolton Wanderers.

A busy summer of international matches for MLS clubs just keeps getting busier.

The Toronto FC and Philadelphia Union on Tuesday both announced international matches in July.

Bolton Wanderers FC will become the latest English Premier League club to visit North America this summer when they meet Toronto FC on July 21 in the Carlsberg Cup. The Trotters, who finished 14th in the recently concluded EPL season, feature U.S. National Team midfielder Stuart Holden.

The Union, meanwhile, will warm up for their big international clash against Manchester United on July 21 with a match against Celtic F.C. at PPL Park on July 14 (8 p.m. ET). The game against the Scottish giants replaces the previously announced match-up against La Liga’s third best club, Valencia.

“Unfortunately that game [vs. Valencia] will not be played this year,” said Philadelphia Union President Tom Veit in a statement. “Valencia and their appointed promoter have backed out of the agreement that was reached with the Union and other MLS teams.”

Information regarding general ticket sales for both events in Philadelphia and Toronto will be announced at a later date.
