Q&A with Ryan Suarez

Ryan Suarez 55

Aaron, West Los Angeles, Calif.
R.S.
It's just you.
Q:
In an interview, you mentioned that you began wearing the head brace because of a concussion you had previously suffered, what protection does it offer you? Do you feel youths playing soccer should be wearing them as well? --
Margie, Pasadena, Calif.
R.S.
Yes, to both questions. It does protect me from elbows and head injuries. I can definitely see it becoming more popular over the next 10 years.
Q:
What are your feelings towards the supporter groups, such as the L.A. Riot Squad? --
Roman, Calif.
R.S.
I think they are brilliant. It brings a little of the tradition of international soccer to the sport here in Los Angeles. A little passion, if you will, is always good.
Q:
What has been one of I'm sure many highlights with playing for the Los Angeles Galaxy so far? --
Claudia, Kansas City, Mo.
R.S.
There are so many I can't count them. Definitely, being a part of the "California Clasico" between the Galaxy and Earthquakes, and playing at the cathedral of soccer stadiums in the U.S. are just two highlights.
Q:
What advice would you give to the aspirant youth wishing to make it in the professional field? Is it talent or perseverance the answer? --
Carlos, Oakland, Calif.
R.S.
It is a little bit of both, because you need talent, but without the dedication to train, you won't make it very far. The key is to never give up.
Q:
What would be your first pick if you could play for any team in the world? If it's the Galaxy, what would be your second pick? --
Miles, Corona del Mar, Calif.
R.S.
AC Milan, that's my team.
Q:
What kind of music do you listen to? Do you play any instrument?
-- Christina, St. Louis, Mo.
R.S.
No instruments. Now, I mainly listen to a lot of Latin reggae.
Q:
I have noticed, at the games, the way you interact with kids. They look up to you. What do you think, as a professional athlete, your responsibility is as a role model for kids? As a parent, I appreciate it when athletes take the time to talk to kids. --
Palmdale, Calif.
R.S.
I think that is our duty to have a relationship with our fans, but especially the young ones who will be the next generation of players.
Q:
The Galaxy tend to focus a lot of energy on the attack. What's the mentality on the back line when you're looking for a goal? --
Ben, Tucson, Ariz.
R.S.
To not give one up because as you push forward sometimes you can expose yourself to a counter attack. So as a defender, you must always stay alert, and support the attacking players.
