Jose Andres Martinez
HOW ACQUIRED: Transferred from Zulia FC on Dec. 25, 2019.
Nicknamed El Brujo (“The Wizard”), Martinez is a rugged holding midfielder who arrives from the Venezuelan top flight for his first stint outside his homeland, “an up-and-coming player whose tenacity and athleticism will bolster our midfield,” in the words of Union sporting director Ernst Tanner.
INTERNATIONAL: A Venezuelan international, Martinez was called up to the Vinotinto squad in November 2019 but is still awaiting his full national-team debut.
OUTSIDE MLS: Martinez began his professional career at his hometown club Deportivo JBL del Zulia, then moved to Zulia FC in 2017, where he scored two goals and four assists across 65 appearances in 2018 and 2019. He competed in the 2019 Copa Sudamericana, where he helped Zulia reach the quarterfinals – the furthest a Venezuelan team has ever made it in the competition's history – and was on the Zulia FC team that won the 2018 Copa Venezuela.
