Nicknamed El Brujo (“The Wizard”), Martinez is a rugged holding midfielder joined the Union ahead of the 2020 season from Venezuelan club Zulia FC. He didn't take long to settle in then became an integral part of the starting XI, helping guide the team to the 2020 Supporters' Shield. He made 14 regular season starts, missing time with the Venezuelan national team. 

INTERNATIONAL: A Venezuelan international, Martinez was first called up to the Vinotinto squad in November 2019 but is still awaiting his full national-team debut.

OUTSIDE MLS: Martinez began his professional career at his hometown club Deportivo JBL del Zulia, then moved to Zulia FC in 2017, where he scored two goals and four assists across 65 appearances in 2018 and 2019. He competed in the 2019 Copa Sudamericana, where he helped Zulia reach the quarterfinals – the furthest a Venezuelan team has ever made it in the competition's history – and was on the Zulia FC team that won the 2018 Copa Venezuela.
