Career Summary

A Jamaican international with exceptional pace and good distribution from the right back position, Javain Brown was selected by Whitecaps FC with the 23rd overall pick at the 2021 MLS SuperDraft. He agreed to an MLS contract with club options through 2024 in February 2021.

In January 2022, Brown agreed to a new contract through 2024, with a club option for 2025.

WHITECAPS FC

'23: Brown continued to deputize as a right-sided centre back and fullback in 2023, starting a career-high 26 of his 32 appearances across all competitions. The Jamaican international scored the first goal of the season for the ‘Caps, heading in a corner kick in the first half of the home opener against Real Salt Lake on February 25. Brown also provided three assists, with two of them coming in the 5-0 victory over CF Montréal on April 1. 

'22: In his second season with the club, Brown showed his versatility across the pitch, being deployed as centre back, fullback and wingback on either side of the pitch. Brown started 23 of his 29 appearances across all competitions in 2022 and scored his first professional goal at Nashville SC on July 30 to help the ‘Caps claim a late 1-1 draw in the Music City. The Jamaican international finished the season with a team-leading 139 recoveries in MLS play.

'21: In his rookie season, Brown started 19 matches and made 26 appearances in MLS, including playoffs. The Jamaican international led the team in tackles won with 40 and tallied the fourth most assists amongst MLS defenders with five during the regular season. Throughout the season, Brown showed his versatility by being deployed on either side of the field as a fullback or a wingback. Brown also started the Canadian Championship match against Pacific FC.

COLLEGE

'19: Brown played one season of collegiate soccer prior to the COVID-19 pandemic cancelling the 2020 season. After redshirting in 2018, Brown started 17 of the 18 games he played for the Bulls in 2019, scoring three goals – all game-winners. At the end of the season he was honoured on the American Athletic Conference First Team and All-Rookie Team. He was also a three-time selection for AAC Defensive Player of the Week.

USL LEAGUE TWO

'19: Brown also played one season in USL League Two with Treasure Coast Tritons, making six appearances.

JAMAICAN PREMIER LEAGUE

’16 to '18: Prior to enrolling at South Florida, Brown played two seasons with Harbour View FC in the Jamaican Premier League, starting 31 of his 32 appearances and scoring one goal.

INTERNATIONAL

As of February 2021, the native of Kingston, Jamaica has represented his country at the senior international level 19 times since making his debut for the Reggae Boyz against Trinidad & Tobago in 2017. After joining the national team program at the U-17 level, he made five appearances for the U-20 national team and four appearances at the U-23 level, including three matches at the 2019 Pan American Games in Peru.
