A Kenny Cooper penalty kick in the 89th minute provided the tying goal, as FC Dallas came back to snatch a 1-1 draw with the San Jose Earthquakes on MLS Primetime Thursday at Pizza Hut Park. Seconds after coming on as a substitute, the Quakes' Ryan Johnson broke up a very tight contest between the two teams in the thick of the race for a playoff spot in the Western Conference, putting San Jose ahead in the 58th minute. But in the final minutes, San Jose midfielder Francisco Lima was ruled to have knocked down a cross with his hand by Eric Avila, and referee Abbey Okulaja whistled the deciding penalty kick. At least in the early stages, it was the host side that was on the offensive. But the game's first testing chance didn't come until the 26th minute when San Jose forward Arturo Alvarez, who spent five years with the Hoops before being traded out west earlier this year, fouled Pablo Ricchetti about 30 yards from goal.Andre Rocha took the resulting free kick and struck a nice, bending ball that curved toward the right post, where it was met by Earthquakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon, who perfectly executed a well-timed, diving save to keep the match scoreless. The Earthquakes nearly jumped ahead in the 34th minute. Alvarez spotted Darren Huckerby making a great run down the center of the FCD half and slotted a quick ball to him. Huckerby had a one-on-one opportunity with FCD goalkeeper Dario Sala, but the Hoops 'keeper was able to get a hand on the ball and deflect the shot wide. Just before halftime, San Jose dodged a huge bullet. After midfielder Ronnie O'Brien coughed up the ball in the visiting third, Cunningham spotted Cooper making a run inside the box. Cooper was all set to get a shot off when Earthquakes defender Nick Garcia executed a perfect slide tackle at the last possible moment to deflect the FCD striker's effort. After 45 minutes of play, FCD had eight shots while the Earthquakes registered just four. But each goalkeeper had been called upon to make just the single save. The first substitution of the game came in the 57th minute when San Jose head coach Frank Yallop went to his bench, bringing on Johnson for O'Brien. That change paid quick dividends when the San Jose midfielder converted less than a minute later. San Jose defender Jason Hernandez got possession near the 18-yard box and then hit a long ball that bounced near midfield. That was where FCD center back Duilio Davino was marking Scott Sealy but Davino let the ball scoot through as it bounced over Sealy. Johnson ran on to collect the ball just outside of the FCD box. With Hoops goalkeeper Dario Sala rushing to stop his progress, Johnson stroked a left-footed shot just inside Sala's right leg to give the visitors a 1-0 edge. It was his fifth goal of the year. FC Dallas quickly tried to respond. Cunningham broke free for the Hoops in the 60th and with San Jose's James Riley in tow, got a shot off but it was right at Cannon and the MLS veteran made the save. Riley appeared to take the FCD striker down on the play but the infraction went uncalled. Then in the 65th minute, after a Rocha corner kick, Davino had a nice look at the goal and took a shot. Riley got in front of the Mexican international's effort in the goalmouth and San Jose remained ahead 1-0. FCD head coach Schellas Hyndman went to his bench in the 69th minute, taking off right back Adrian Serioux for speedy offensive threat Dominic Oduro. It was the Hoops' second change of the night. In the 62nd, Avila came on for Bruno Guarda. Alvarez left the field in the 71st for Shea Salinas in Yallop's second change of the evening. Hyndman made his final change in the 82nd with Victor Sikora entering for Saragosa. It was Sikora's first action since Aug. 23 at Kansas City, when he left after 50 minutes with a right knee injury. With FC Dallas pressing in vain for the tying goal,Avila sent a cross from the right flank that caught one of Lima's hands, and despite heavy protestations from the Earthquakes, referee Okujala awarded the penalty. Cooper stepped up and converted. With Cannon going to his right, the FCD striker punched the ball into the left side of the net. It was the third PK Cooper has converted this year and his 16th goal of 2008. The goal was also the Hoops' 11th in the final 15 minutes this season.
Last Match vs Chivas USA: August 23 - The Home Depot Center; Carson , Calif.
The San Jose Earthquakes earned a hard-fought scoreless draw with Chivas USA at The Home Depot Center on Saturday night in a vital game for both teams at the foot of the Western Conference standings. Behind a strong goalkeeping performance by Joe Cannon, the Earthquakes fended off a resurgent Chivas USA who welcomed Sacha Kljestan and Ante Razov back to the lineup. Both clubs have been heading in opposite directions coming into the match. While the Earthquakes had been unbeaten in their last five matches, Chivas USA had not won a game in their last five tries. Chivas USA's last win came against the Earthquakes on July 5.With the result the Earthquakes remain in last place in the Western Conference with nine matches remaining. However, only five points separate them from second-place Real Salt Lake. Chivas USA, meanwhile, moved into a tie for fourth place. Earthquakes coach Frank Yallop was forced to go to his bench early when midfielder Ramiro Corrales went down with a leg injury inside his own penalty area in the 13th minute. Corrales gingerly walked off the field and was replaced by Kelly Gray. Chivas USA had its first scoring opportunity on the half-hour mark. Ante Razov was taken down just outside of the Earthquakes penalty area, setting up a 20-yard free kick. Razov took the ensuing kick, bending the ball over the wall out of the reach of goalkeeper Joe Cannon but just wide right of the goal. In the 37th minute the referee gave out his first yellow card of the match when James Riley was cautioned for a hard tackle on Chivas USA midfielder Jorge Flores. Chivas USA challenged Cannon again moments before the end of the first half. Razov, Atiba Harris and Kljestan strung together a quick series of passes near the top of the goal area before Kljestan hit a low shot that Cannon was able to smother. Then on their ensuing possession, Chivas USA's Flores dribbled around Riley on the left flank and into the penalty area where he dropped the ball off to Harris who hit a shot that went just wide of the diving Cannon and the goal. Chivas USA continued putting pressure on the Earthquakes backline into the second. In the 52nd minute, Kljestan fed Razov a through ball at the edge of the penalty area. Razov's shot, however, was not well-struck and he sent the ball out of play. In the 73rd minute Chivas USA had a goal disallowed for offside. Alecko Eskandarian took a pass inside the penalty area and shot past Cannon; however, Eskandarian was in an offside position when he received the ball. Three minutes later Chivas USA just missed the go-ahead goal. Harris hit a low shot inside the penalty area the forced Cannon to make a diving save. Francisco Mendoza controlled the rebounding ball and laid if off for Eskandarian who hit a shot that went just wide right of the goal. Earthquakes winger Ronnie O'Brien nearly scored five minutes from time. But Zach Thornton made a superb diving save on the shot to preserve the shutout for Chivas.

Quakes Take On Club Deportivo FAS
The Earthquakes will host defending Salvadoran champion Club Deportivo FAS on Tuesday, Oct. 7. The game will be held at Buck Shaw Stadium and will be season ticket holder bonus game "B." Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. PT. The match will mark the first time that the Earthquakes have faced an opponent from El Salvador. The Quakes are 5-7-5 all-time against international opponents in friendly matches, including their 4-0 victory over the Honduran Olympic Team earlier this season.
Cell Phone Collection for Verizon Wireless
The San Jose Earthquakes will collect used cell phones, cell phone batteries, and chargers at all remaining home games for the 2008 season. Cell phones collected at the game will be donated to the Verizon Wireless HopeLine program, benefitting victims of domestic violence. Fans that turn in old cell phones, cell phone chargers, and batteries at collection tables will receive a half price ticket voucher for the game and their name will be entered for a special meet and greet with Earthquakes players Darren Huckerby and Nick Garcia. Collection dates will be October 7 vs. FAS (exhibition game), October 11 vs. Chivas USA and October 25th vs. Toronto FC.
Habana Cuba Fundraising Nights
The San Jose Earthquakes have teamed up with Habana Cuba this fall to provide good food for a good cause. Fans that bring in an Earthquakes ticket stub or mention the special Earthquakes Night will have 15 percent of their purchase donated to the San Jose Earthquakes Community Fund. The special Earthquakes nights will take place on Oct. 10 and Oct. 24. Habana Cuba is located at 238 Race Street in San Jose.
Houston Match Rescheduled
The San Jose Earthquakes match against the Houston Dynamo on Saturday, Sept. 20 was rescheduled last week. The game will now be played on Wednesday, October 15 at 6:00 p.m. PT at Robertson Stadium in Houston, Texas. The match will air live on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area and on the radio in Spanish on KLOK 1170 AM. The decision to reschedule the match was made after discussions with Houston officials emphasized the logistical difficulties and public safety threat posed by the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Ike. Houston Police Department chief Harold Hurtt recommended that all events, sporting venues, and cultural institutions suspend public activities and performances until Monday while basic infrastructure services such as street lights are restored.
Western Conference Playoff Race Heats Up
As the race continues to make it to the playoffs in the Western Conference, the Earthquakes will take on two consecutive Western Conference foes in the coming weeks. These two head-to-head matches will go a long way in determining the Western Conference playoff qualifiers. Along with this Saturday's match against Chivas USA, the Quakes will travel to Houston to take on the Dynamo on Wednesday, Oct. 15.
Johnson Strikes Again
Johnson scored for the fifth time this season against FC Dallas on Thursday, Oct. 2. The Oregon State midfielder came in as a sub in the 57th minute and scored a minute later after a long ball from Jason Hernandez.
Huckerby Named MLS Player of the Month for September
After another outstanding month, San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Darren Huckerby was named Major League Soccer Player of the Month for September. He is the first member of the Earthquakes to earn the honor this season. For the season, Huckerby has now scored six goals and recorded four assists in nine games with San Jose, while leading the Quakes to a 4-1-4 record during that time. He is the leading scorer for the Quakes this season.
Alvarez Hot
Arturo Alvarez has scored or notched an assist in the past five matches. Alvarez assisted Darren Huckerby on his second goal against RSL on Sept. 27. After scoring on Aug. 30 against Kansas City and Sept. 6 against D.C. United, he set up Ronnie O'Brien for San Jose's lone goal on Sept. 13. He has now scored three goals and notched two assists for San Jose since arriving in a trade from FC Dallas prior to the Quakes match against the Los Angeles Galaxy on Aug. 3. For the season he has a career-high six goals and has a career high five assists.
Earthquakes - Chivas USA Connections
Earthquakes forward John Cunliffe played for Chivas USA in his rookie season in 2007. He was traded to San Jose on March 28 for midfielder Chris Pozniak. Defender Jason Hernandez played the last two seasons for Chivas USA before being selected by the Earthquakes in the eighth round of the 2007 MLS Expansion Draft.

Expansion Watch
Including the San Jose Earthquakes, four expansion teams have entered the league since 2005. In 2005, Chivas USA and Real Salt Lake earned four and five wins, respectively, while Chivas picked up 18 points and RSL 20 points. Last season, Toronto FC had six wins and 25 points for the entire season. After defeating D.C. United 2-1 Sept. 6, the Earthquakes earned their seventh win of the season. Their tie against FC Dallas gave them 30 points for the season with four matches remaining. The Quakes have now moved past Toronto as the winningest expansion team of this decade in MLS.
Passing Futility
The Earthquakes scored one goal against FC Dallas on Oct. 2 and now have scored 27 goals on the season. That total surpasses the lowest goals scored total in MLS history of 25, set by Toronto FC in 2007.

The Earthquakes have allowed only 32 goals this season after allowing one goal FCD on Thursday night. That total places them in for fourth place in the league in goals allowed.
Corrales in Record Books
Ramiro Corrales started and played 14 minutes Aug. 23 against Chivas USA to record his 126th start and 11,266 minutes as a member of the Quakes. He is now sixth all-time in club history in minutes and fifth in starts. Next on the list for minutes played and starts for the Quakes is general manager John Doyle (1996-2000), who recorded 11,385 minutes and started 129 games. With 142 appearances, Corrales is now tied for third on the all-time appearances list. He is tied with Wade Barrett (1998-2002, 2005), who has made 142 appearances.
Cannon in Quakes Record Books
Earthquakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon played 90 minutes Oct. 2 against FC Dallas to record his 127th career game as a member of the Earthquakes putting him in eight place, just behind Troy Dayak with 129 games, Ian Russell with 131 games, John Doyle with 132 games and Ramiro Corrales with 142 games as a member of the Quakes. Cannon has also recorded 11,601 minutes, good for fourth all-time in Quakes history.

Earthquakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon is ranked fifth in goals against average with a 1.23 mark and is thirid in saves with 103. He is tied for third in shutouts with eight, two behind Chicago's Jon Busch, who has 10.

Earthquakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon is among the all-time league leaders in Major League Soccer history in a number of goalkeeping categories. He is currently third all-time in MLS in appearances (242), third in minutes (21795), fourth all-time in saves (1005), second all-time in shutouts (64), fifth all-time in wins (91) and seventh all-time in goals against average (1.29). For San Jose goalkeepers, Cannon is first in club history in appearances (127), first in minutes played (11601), first in saves (537), first in wins (53), first in shutouts (34) and second in goals against average (1.25) and saves percentage (74.5). He also holds the team's all-time record for saves in a game with 12 on July 8, 2000 at Colorado.
