Earthquakes 2, Columbus Crew 0; June 7, 2008; Crew Stadium; Columbus, Ohio
Set up by two pinpoint services from Ronnie O'Brien, goals from Ryan Johnson and Ramiro Corrales gave the San Jose Earthquakes a win against the Columbus Crew in Ohio, a 2-0 victory on Saturday evening at Crew Stadium. Johnson headed home an O'Brien cross in the first half and Corrales headed home an O'Brien free kick sent in from the corner after the break to give the Quakes just their third victory ever in Columbus in 14 trips. After San Jose goalkeeper Joe Cannon made a nice save on a Chad Marshall header to keep the Crew out of the net early, the Earthquakes countered at the other end and took the lead in the 10th minute. O'Brien ran down a poor clearance at the right touchline before serving the ball into the area where Johnson headed home for his second goal of the season. In the 35th minute, the Crew nearly pulled level. Defender Jed Zayner, making his first league start of the season with Danny O'Rourke suspended, uncorked a left-footed blast from nearly 30 yards. The drive beat Cannon's acrobatic dive, but the crossbar denied Zayner's effort. Emmanuel Ekpo continued to be a threat on the right side for the Crew in the second half. After dribbling through several defenders in the corner, he rolled a slow ball that found a cutting Guillermo Barros Schelotto in the heart of the box. But the San Jose defense closed down on the Argentinean playmaker quickly and Jason Hernandez was able to clear the threat. The Earthquakes doubled their lead at the hour mark. Iro fouled John Cunliffe just outside the box on the right, and again O'Brien stepped to the ball. Again he picked out a teammate's head with a perfect cross, this time finding Corrales who snapped a header past Crew goalkeeper William Hesmer inside the back post. San Jose's Ryan Cochrane had received a yellow card for a foul on Schelotto in the 65th minute, then the Quakes' Kelly Gray saw yellow for a foul on Robbie Rogers in the 69th minute. The teams were then each left a player short with a pair of red cards over a five-minute span, the Crew's Brad Evans given a straight red for a foul on Gray in the 80th minute, then James Riley received his second yellow of the game in the 85th. Over the four minutes of stoppage time, the Crew pressed hard in looking to finally hit the back of the net, forcing Cannon into three of his four saves on the night after the 90th minute. But he stood tall between the posts, giving San Jose just their third victory of the season.
Last Match vs. Los Angeles Galaxy
Galaxy 2, Earthquakes 0; April 3, 2008; The Home Depot Center; Carson, Calif.
The San Jose Earthquakes fell to the Los Angeles Galaxy 2-0 in the team's return to Major League Soccer on April 3 at The Home Depot Center. The Quakes nearly got off to a dream start in the opening two minutes, as Ryan Cochrane headed a ball past former college teammate Steve Cronin. However, the goal was disallowed as the referee called the play offside. Ramiro Corrales sent a free kick into the box that took a bounce and was headed into the net by Cochrane, before being called back. The Galaxy took the lead in the ninth minute after a turnover by the Quakes defense. Landon Donovan intercepted a back pass and found David Beckham with a through ball. Beckham then slotted the ball past goalkeeper Joe Cannon, as he came out to challenge at the top of the box. The Quakes came close again in the 22nd minute on a corner kick this time. Corrales swung a corner kick into the box that was cleared away to the top of the box. Ivan Guerrero corralled the ball and hit a shot that was saved by Cronin. The ball deflected off Cronin right to Cochrane, but the Galaxy defense converged to clear the ball out of danger. The Galaxy netted a second goal with just under 10 minutes to play before halftime. Donovan latched onto a long ball out of the back and then chipped a shot over Cannon into the empty net. Cannon kept San Jose in the game with a key save midway through the second half. Donovan made a long run from midfield and found Alan Gordon on the right wing. Gordon took a touch a fired a low shot, but Cannon made a foot save to keep the deficit at two.

History of the Quakes-Galaxy Rivalry
As the two original MLS teams in California, the Earthquakes (then known as the Clash) and the Galaxy met for the first time in league history on April 28, 1996 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. In front of a crowd of 40,347, the Clash fell to the Galaxy 2-1. From 1996-2005, the two teams met each other more than any other teams in the league. Along with playing each 38 times in the regular season, the Quakes and the Galaxy have also met eight times in the playoffs and four times in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The teams squared off in the playoffs in 1996, 2001, 2003 and 2005 ... The Galaxy captured the 1996 three-game series two games to one, winning the final two games of the series at the Rose Bowl ... In 2001, the two teams met in MLS Cup with the Quakes earning a 2-1 overtime win. Dwayne De Rosario scored the winning goal in overtime for San Jose ... The 2003 playoff series between the Galaxy and the Quakes produced one of the most memorable games in league history. After losing the opening game of the two-game aggregate goal series 2-0, San Jose fell behind 2-0 in the second game to trail 4-0 overall in the series. However, the Earthquakes responded with four goals in regulation to tie the series 4-4. Chris Ronér tied the series in the 90th minute. Rodrigo Faria then scored six minutes into overtime to send San Jose to the Western Conference Championship game. The Quakes would go on to win the 2003 MLS Cup ... 2005 marked the end of the line for the Quakes. After losing the first leg of the Western Conference Semifinals 3-1 to the Galaxy at The Home Depot Center, the Quakes needed another two-goal comeback to win the series. After going up 1-0 on a Brian Ching goal in game two on Oct. 29, 2005, Ned Grabavoy scored for the Galaxy to end the Quakes hopes. That match marked the Earthquakes final game and the team was relocated to Houston on Dec. 15, 2005.

Donovan scored 32 goals and notched 29 assists in his Earthquakes career and is still the club's all-time leader in playoff goals with 10. For the first time in his career, Donovan saw Quakes head coach Frank Yallop coaching the opposing team in the Quakes' 2-0 loss to the Galaxy on April 3. With the exception of Yallop coaching the Canadian National Team in a friendly game against the Quakes in 2004, Yallop coached Donovan his entire MLS coaching career before this season.
