Last Game
Sounders FC 2, Earthquakes 0; April 25, 2009; Qwest Field: Seattle, Wash.
The Earthquakes couldn't find the net on Saturday in a 2-0 loss to Seattle Sounders FC Saturday night in a Western Conference match at Qwest Field. Rookie Steve Zakuani scored a first-half goal and provided an assist on Brad Evans' early in the second half for Seattle. Goalkeeper Kasey Keller, who returned after missing one match for an April 11 red card, set an MLS record by starting the season without allowing a goal in 389 minutes. The Earthquakes put the heat on early with shot attempts in the fourth minute, the last of which came off the foot of Shea Salinas but it was blocked point-blank by Seattle's Jhon Kennedy Hurtado. Salinas wheeled and fired from the middle of the penalty area 13 yards away, but came up empty. The Earthquakes dodged a Sounders FC scoring chance in the 29th minute as Freddie Ljungberg caromed a shot through traffic and off teammate Jaqua. Ljungberg's 15-yard shot glanced off Jaqua and trickled just outside the left post. After a free kick, Sounders FC rookie Zakuani nailed a header at the right post for a 1-0 lead after a cross from Tyrone Marshall. Down 1-0, the Earthquakes nearly knotted the score when Ryan Johnson forced Seattle goalkeeper Kasey Keller to bat away a header on a corner kick in the 48th minute. Johnson almost snuck the ball into the upper right corner of the net on the corner from Arturo Alvarez. Then, no more than two minutes later, Seattle went up 2-0 in the 50th minute on Brad Evans' second goal of the season. Evans buried a 14-yard chance with Cannon drawn out to defend after passes from Steve Zakuani and Nate Jaqua.
Last Match vs. New York
Earthquakes 1, Red Bulls 1; July 27, 2008; Buck Shaw Stadium: Santa Clara, Calif.
The San Jose Earthquakes and New York Red Bulls had to settle for a 1-1 draw on a sunny afternoon at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Red Bulls were gifted an early own goal, but one of the Earthquakes' new signings, Darren Huckerby, equalized nine minutes later. Just four minutes into the game the Red Bulls scored, with a lot of help from the Earthquakes. Dave van den Bergh's long cross from left midfield looked relatively harmless as San Jose defender Eric Denton played it on the bounce inside the penalty area, but Denton's header back to Joe Cannon floated over the goalkeeper's head and into the net. The Earthquakes got that goal back in the 13th minute. A Ronnie O'Brien throw in found Sealy in the box with his back to the goal. Sealy turned and shot left footed from 10 yards out. Jon Conway made the initial save, but Darren Huckerby pounced on the rebound, scoring his first MLS goal to tie the game at 1-1. San Jose had most of the chances the rest of the way, but neither team could break through for the deciding goal. Twice, Jeff Parke made sliding tackles to stop an Earthquakes forward breaking in alone on goal. Parke's heroics stopped Ryan Johnson in the 22nd minute and Sealy in the 79th. New York's best scoring chance came in the 87th minute, after John Wolyniec spun past two defenders and broke in on goal from the left side of midfield. Wolyniec set up Mike Magee for a shot, but his effort from the top of the box went straight to goalkeeper Cannon.
Last Match vs. Chivas USA
Chivas USA 1, Earthquakes 0; October 11, 2008; Buck Shaw Stadium: Santa Clara, Calif.
The San Jose Earthquakes fell to Chivas USA 1-0 at Buck Shaw Stadium in front of a standing room only sellout of 10,502 fans. Justin Braun scored for Chivas USA in the seventh minute to give the Southern California team the victory. Chivas were first out of the blocks, with Alecko Eskandarian's simple ball over the top springing Braun on a clear breakaway in the seventh minute. The Quakes' frantic appeals for offside were ignored, and Braun rifled his shot past Joe Cannon, just inside the far post. San Jose eventually got their passing game on track, although Chivas were pressing them every step of the way. A quick combination in the 32nd minute involving Eric Denton and Alvarez nearly put Huckerby through on goal, but a well-timed challenge from Francisco Mendoza broke up the play. The Quakes ratcheted up the pressure, forcing a slew of set pieces. One such opportunity saw Ronnie O'Brien threaten the Chivas goal in the 35th minute, but Chivas 'keeper Dan Kennedy touched his free kick around the post. San Jose continued to have most of the possession to begin the second half. Scott Sealy appeared to have a clear look at goal in the 47th minute, but Claudio Suarez was on hand for a vital block. Francisco Lima had a similar shot from inside the box just a minute later, but this time it was Alex Zotinca with a goal-line clearance. O'Brien nearly equalized in the 77th minute when his mazy run from the right wing saw him cut into the box, but his shot curled just wide. Although San Jose had a few late chances, Chivas was able to hold on for the victory.
