MF Andy Williams to Represent Jamaica in World Cup Qualifying Wednesday at Canada
Real Salt Lake MF Andy Williams joined the Jamaican National Team earlier this week in Canada in preparation for the Reggae Boyz' CONCACAF semifinal round opener in World Cup Qualifying, set to take place against Canada tomorrow, Wednesday, August 20. Kick-off between Jamaica and Canada at BMO Field in Toronto, Ontario, Canada - which happens to be the birthplace of the veteran RSL midfielder - is set for 5:30 p.m. MT. The 30-year-old Williams has been a fixture in Jamaica's starting line-up this summer thanks to the reinstatement of '98 World Cup coach Rene Simoes, resulting in Williams approaching the 90-cap mark (86 caps, 12 goals) for his career as World Cup Qualifying resumes this week. Williams is expected to rejoin his RSL teammates in time for this Saturday's pivotal road contest at the Columbus Crew.
Real Salt Lake's Road Show Continues Saturday at East Leaders Columbus
Real Salt Lake (7-7-6, 27 pts.) will continue the most difficult portion of its 2008 schedule this Saturday, August 23, when Utah's MLS side will travel to the Midwest to square off against the Eastern Conference's newly-anointed top squad, the Columbus Crew (10-6-4, 24 pts.). Kick-off from Columbus Crew Stadium in Ohio's capital city is slated for 5:30 p.m. MT, with KSL-TV 5.3 Digital (Comcast Ch. 105) coverage beginning a half-hour earlier at 5:00 p.m. with the America First Credit Union Pre-Game Show. Fans can also follow the action live via the team's official radio partners: KALL 700 Sports (with RSL First Kick pre-game coverage beginning at 4:30 p.m.) and "Ke Buena" 1600-AM.
While Real Salt Lake and Columbus will close out their two-game regular season series on Saturday, the contest will actually mark the third meeting of 2008 between the squads. The first encounter took place in Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Qualifying play at Crew Stadium on May 27, when The Crew used goals on either side of the half and a red card on RSL MF Dema Kovalenko early in the second stanza to post a 2-0 victory that ended RSL's qualification attempt for U.S. Soccer's National Championship tourney. RSL would exact its revenge in League play on July 12, as goals by Javier Morales and Robbie Findley would give the Utah side a 2-0 win of its own at Rice-Eccles Stadium, a result that pushed RSL into first-place in the Western Conference for the first time in club history. RSL now stands at 2-4-1 against The Crew all-time in MLS play, which includes a 1-2-0 mark in Columbus, the lone away win in the series coming on Aug. 16, 2006, via a 2-1 victory.
