MLSsoccer.com fans voted South Africa’s Siphiwe Tshabalala the Player of the Day for Friday after the Bafana Bafana midfielder scored the dramatic opening goal for the hosts in a 1-1 draw against Mexico.
Tshabalala rocketed a shot past Mexico goalkeeper Óscar Pérez in the 55th minute for the opening goal of the World Cup. He received roughly 45 percent of the vote, easily topping Uruguayan striker Diego Forlán (20 percent).
Mexico’s Rafael Marquez, who scored El Tri’s equalizer in the 79th minute, finished third in the poll with 17 percent. South Africa goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune finished fourth, with 13 percent of the vote.
