Gedion Zelalam could be close to returning to the United States and playing in Major League Soccer, according to a report out of England.

Football.london reports that Arsenal and Sporting Kansas City are in talks over a permanent deal for the 22-year-old midfielder whose rapid ascension up the ranks in U.S. Soccer, as well as his club career, has been stinted due to a ruptured cruciate ligament at the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup in South Korea.

There is interest from Sporting Kansas City, who are exploring the possibility, but the club say a deal is not imminent. The possibility was first reported by Steve Goff of the Washington Post five weeks ago.

Zelalam made his first team debut for the Gunners in an FA Cup match in January, 2014 after impressing in the English Premier League giants’ youth ranks. Two months later he signed a contract extension with Arsenal and again featured off the bench, this time against Galatassaray in the UEFA Champions League.

He subsequently went on loan, first with Scottish powerhouse Rangers, helping the club win the second-tier title, and then to VVV Venio in the Dutch Eerste Divisie.

Zelalam returned to Arsenal and has played with the club’s U-23s, scoring in a 2-2 draw against Brighton in January.
