Poll: Vancouver's MLS crest preferred to Portland's

Portland Timbers logo, Vancouver Whitecaps logo

Although the two Pacific Northwest rivals won't be joining MLS until 2011, the Vancouver Whitecaps already hold a slight edge over the Portland Timbers.

In the graphics department, at least. That's according to a poll recently conducted by MLSsoccer.com.

The two clubs unveiled their MLS crests barely days apart last week to plenty of fanfare. We asked visitors which they preferred, and they chose Vancouver's by a slim margin of 54 percent to 46 percent.

Vancouver revealed a crest that is a complete redesign of the one they currently use in the USSF D-2, incorporating stylized images of the mountains and waterfront that characterize the city.

"Vancouver's logo is as clever as it is creative," said one Facebook user who commented on the site.

Portland launched their new logo through a series of video "crest clue" teasers. The familiar design harkens back to the original crest first used in the NASL. It had remained virtually untouched in 35 years.
