FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The search for a new club has led Pat Phelan back to his former employers.
Phelan linked up with New England this week as he attempts to maintain his fitness and his sharpness ahead of planned trials in Europe this summer. The two sides parted ways after three-and-a-half years during the offseason, but Revolution coach Jay Heaps said he didn't have any qualms about adding his former teammate into the mix.
“He has some opportunities coming up down the road,” Heaps told MLSsoccer.com. “He helps the level, and he wanted to get fit for this summer. Having known Pat for many years, it was an easy one.”
That particular adjective – easy – doesn't quite fit the journey Phelan has embarked upon since cutting ties with the Revs in November and starting his search for a new club. A trial spell with Danish first-division side Viborg FF in March didn't lead to a fresh contract, while settled roster situations have made finding a club in the US or Europe difficult at this point.
“It's been awful, really,” Phelan told MLSsoccer.com. “I believe I can still play at this level. I'm just looking for an opportunity. Most guys go through it at some point in their career, but it leaves you with a lot of time to reflect, figure out how you got to this point and wonder what you could have done differently.”
Reflecting on the past prompted Phelan to commit to improving his future. The 27-year-old can point to the experience he gained during his 80 MLS appearances as he scours the planet for a new club, but he said he plans to keep all doors open as he attempts to secure a contract for the next stage of his career.
“Beggars can't be choosers,” Phelan said. “I mean, I do have places around the world where I'm not willing to go, but I'd like to find somewhere to play. I'm hungrier than ever. I'm itching to play. I know there's a team out there for me somewhere.”
