Leverkusen falls to Borussia Dortmund

Jurgen Klopp

Borussia Dortmund began each half with a bang to give new coach Jurgen Klopp victory over Bayer Leverkusen in his first Bundesliga game in charge.

Nelson Valdez opened the scoring after four minutes and Neven Subotic headed the visitors' third after 49 minutes to sink Leverkusen on Saturday.

Patrick Helmes bagged a goal on his league debut to briefly bring the hosts level at 1-1, but Florian Kringe restored Dortmund's lead.

And Stefan Kiessling gave Leverkusen hope of snatching a point with their second seven minutes from time, but substitute goalkeeper Marc Ziegler kept them at bay.

The visitors got off to a flying start when Jakub Blaszczykowski swung a cross in from the right and Valdez nicked the ball past Manuel Friedrich before slipping it beyond Leverkusen stopper Benedikt Fernandez.

Helmes, a summer signing from Cologne, had his side on level terms in the 21st minute though as he immediately endeared himself to his new fans by converting a cross from strike partner Kiessling.

And the Germany international almost doubled his tally, but Roman Weidenfeller - who suffered a knee injury later in the half and had to be replaced by Ziegler - blocked the effort.

Instead it was Dortmund who went back in front, Valdez this time the provider for Kringe to score.

Klopp's men started the second half as they did the first as Subotic met a Tamas Hajnal corner to extend his side's lead.

And they had Ziegler to thank for preserving their two-goal cushion as first he did well to keep out an Arturo Vidal shot from the left-hand side and then saved a free-kick from the lively Helmes.

But the back-up keeper was powerless to prevent Kiessling from setting up a tense finale as he headed Sascha Dum's pin-point pass into the top corner.

Kiessling and Dmitri Bulkin both went close to snatching a last-gasp equaliser for the home side, but Dortmund held on to hand Klopp a winning start.
