Lecce latch onto Serie A pack with win

Lecce secured a vital victory over Siena to boost their hopes of moving clear of the relegation zone in Serie A.

The Salentini began the day just two points clear of the bottom three but doubled their cushion with a rare away victory.

And the win was achieved despite playing 49 minutes with 10 men following the dismissal of Guillermo Giacomazzi for two bookable offenses just before the interval.

By then the visitors were already a goal in front after Giacomazzi's superb pass found Simone Tiribocchi in the 15th minute.

Tiribocchi timed his run well to stay onside and coolly slotted the ball past goalkeeper Gianluca Curci.

Siena had already had an early chance blocked and attempted to get back on level terms in the 24th minute only for Cristiano Del Grosso to fire over the bar after finding some space in the area.

Eight minutes later the home side threatened to equalise twice in quick succession.

First Paul Codrea's free-kick was deflected wide for a corner and from the resulting ball into the box the same player's shot was painfully blocked by Andrea Esposito.

Siena's hopes received a major boost after 41 minutes with Giacomazzi's dismissal, the striker shown a second yellow card for using his elbow in an aerial challenge with Lukas Jarolim in midfield.

However, it was the visitors who doubled their advantage early in the second half as Jose Ignacio Castillo headed home at the near post from a corner.

Fellow goalscorer Tiribocchi had been substituted at half-time as Lecce prepared to defend in the second period and Siena duly pressed to get back into the game.

On the hour Codrea's shot from the edge of the box was well saved well by Francesco Benussi and it took until 10 minutes from the end for Siena to pull a goal back.

Houssine Kharja's corner from the right found substitute Abdelkader Ghezzal unmarked in the area and he headed past Benussi.

Despite enjoying a man advantage the home side failed to carve out many clear chances until the 89th minute, when Emanuele Calaio fired well over.

Six minutes of stoppage game gave Siena plenty of time to find an equalizer but with seconds remaining Massimo Maccarone's shot from the edge of the area drew a fine flying save from Benussi.
