Lazio save face, draw, at home vs. Lecce

Lazio

A late goal from Simone Inzaghi spared Lazio's blushes at the Stadio Olimpico as the league leaders salvaged a point against newcomers Lecce.

The hosts looked to be heading for only their second defeat of the season following Simone Tiribocchi's first-half opener for Lecce.

But substitute Inzaghi popped up in the final minute to snatch a share of the spoils for Lazio, who could still find themselves knocked off top spot later on Saturday if Internazionale beat Bologna.

Prior to the match, Lazio coach Delio Rossi called on his players to concentrate on the task in hand after their impressive start to the season prompted talk of them being title contenders.

And the home side appeared to have their minds on beating Lecce, with chance after chance coming their way in the opening 20 minutes.

Goran Pandev turned Pasquale Foggia's cross narrowly wide after just two minutes, while Stefano Mauri also pushed a shot past the upright as Lecce struggled to cope with the early pressure.

Visiting goalkeeper Francesco Benussi was then called upon to deny Mauro Zarate's drive and soon followed up that save with another stunning intervention to keep out Christian Ledesma's curling free-kick.

The openings continued to come for Lazio but with no success as Zarate fired wide of the left post from 20 yards before Stephan Lichtsteiner tried his luck from distance with a powerful drive which also missed the target.

A goal eventually arrived after 25 minutes, but much to the surprise of the partisan crowd it was Lecce who scored it.

Having survived another battle to keep the ball out of their own net, defender Tiziano Polenghi launched a quick counterattack before supplying a cross from the right which Tiribocchi headed home from six yards.

Lazio were still recovering from that blow when another counterattack almost led to them falling further behind, but Tiribocchi this time pushed his shot past the left post.

Rossi can not have been happy to see his team trailing at the interval, and responded by replacing Mauri with Mourad Meghni up front at the start of the second half.

The change almost paid dividends after 51 minutes when Meghni's long-range effort whizzed narrowly wide.

Lazio once again set up camp in Lecce's half but the chances continued to go begging for the hosts.

Christian Brocchi smashed a shot wide following a perfect cross from Lichtsteiner, while Benussi pulled off a double save to deny the Biancoceleste as Foggia and Meghni were both thwarted in their attempts to score.

Ledesma was the next to try with a speculative shot from 35 yards which almost caught out Benussi, before Sebastiano Siviglia nodded wide from Foggia's cross midway through the half.

Rossi could only watch on from the sidelines as his players continued to squander chances. Alexsander Kolarov skimmed a beautiful curling shot over the bar, and Benussi made further saves to keep out Zarate and Meghni.

And after 79 minutes, Pandev came even closer when his turn and shot from the edge of the box kissed the left post.

It looked as though a goal would never arrive for Lazio, but Rossi tried one last throw of the dice with the introduction of Inzaghi for Brocchi after 83 minutes.

And the veteran striker responded with a minute left on the clock, picking up a half-clearance by the Lecce defense before smashing the ball into the left corner from 20 yards.
