Kick Off: SuperLiga kicks off, Crew seek to pad East lead

PPL Park hosts the Philadephia Union's first ever international match against Celtic on Wednesday

Summer is a busy time for soccer in the USA. Wednesday is a case in point: the launch of SuperLiga, an MLS league match in Columbus, a major international friendly in Philly and the most high-profile training session in the country in Chicago.

Fire manager Carlos de los Cobos says he is placing a high priority on SuperLiga as might be expected of a Mexican manager playing Mexican opposition. His first match comes against a top club in Monarcas Morelia (9:30 p.m. ET, Galavisión)

The New England Revolution will look to carry their momentum from their shock win over the LA Galaxy as they inaugurate SuperLiga 2010 with a tough match against UNAM Pumas on Wednesday night (8 p.m. ET, TeleFutura). Shalrie Joseph will be looking to carry the momentum of Shalrie Joseph Soccer Club being crowned Under-14 national champions.

The Philadelphia Union host Celtic FC at PPL Park (8 p.m. ET) and Celtic’s manager says that he expects Philly to be better than the Scottish giants.

Celtic admit they have not watched video of the Union to prepare for the match. Hard to imagine Peter Nowak has lost sleep over Celtic DVDs.

Here is a link to video and audio from the Celtic press availability on the eve of tonight's match.

During their North American tour, Celtic expect to secure one of Mexico’s top World Cup players, who happens to be at UNAM Pumas.

Manchester United conducted a closed practice session on Tuesday at Toyota Park in Chicago, but Wednesday’s session will be open to the public prior to the start of the Fire's SuperLiga match (5 p.m. ET).

The Crew will look to add to their lead atop the Eastern Conference with a home match against struggling Kansas City (7:30 p.m. ET). You know it’s been bad of late when media is analyzing a club’s contribution to the Player of the Week award.

But contrary to popular belief, Kansas City players feel they are on the right track.

The Wizards are getting good news from the academy front, with one prospect earning national acclaim.

With the various competitions taking place on Wednesday, the US Open Cup will not be among them. It gives time to the lone Third Division side still in contention, the Harrisburg City Islanders, to share their perspective on how to raise the profile of the Open Cup.

Following the release of the first 11 names to the MLS All-Star squad, speculation has already begun as to the next 12 players to be named Friday.

Being named an All-Star is a big deal. After his son’s name appeared among the first batch of All-Stars, one player’s dad has already booked his ticket to travel.

There were no Seattle Sounders players among the 11 names but manager Sigi Schmid refuses to read too much into it.

He’s not an All-Star just yet but learn this name: Roy Hernandez. According to this report, he is a young goal scorer playing in Texas who is likely to be claimed by an MLS squad.

If it wasn't busy enough, the summer transfer window opens Thursday and defending MLS Cup champions Real Salt Lake have two clear objectives in mind.

It’s any day now for the confirmation of the next Fulham FC manager. The latest on Bob Bradley’s chances at Fulham: The Daily Mail has an update.

Meanwhile, Bradley is still the US manager and will surely be checking in with the newest FIFA World Rankings, which are out today.

Bradley’s former pupil, DaMarcus Beasley, has made his decision on whether he will be returning to MLS this summer.

Mexican daily Esto has news on another ex-Fire player: Cuauhtémoc Blanco has also made up his mind on his next club.

A move by Mexican Rafa Márquez to MLS might not be in the cards after all as Barcelona put a 7 million euro price tag on the player.

Barcelona would not be the only ones cashing in on a World Cup player. Paul the Octopus is also set to make millions.

If Márquez does make it to MLS he will become the only Mexican DP in the league after the moves made by the Dynamo on Tuesday.

Regardless of his contract situation, Márquez will be in Los Angeles on Saturday to co-host an event with Eva Longoria which will also feature Hristo Stoitchkov, Andrés Guardado and the dos Santos brothers.
