Getafe grab first home win vs. Valladolid

Getafe finally ended their hunt for a home win this season as they saw off Real Valladolid by the narrowest of margins at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez.

Getafe would have fancied their chances of beating a Valladolid side that had lost their previous three away games, but nothing could be taken for granted with Victor Munoz's side the only outfit in the top 14 yet to win in front of their own fans.

But it proved to be a successful day for the club from the outskirts of Madrid, thanks to Cata Diaz's first-half header.

Munoz opted for an attacking line-up and his side were quickly on the front foot, with Juan Angel Albin shining brightest.

The nippy forward saw a decent effort deflected into the side-netting in the opening 90 seconds, before having two headers saved by Sergio Asenjo - the second a superb finger-tip save by the highly-rated young stopper.

That was all in the opening 12 minutes, and although Valladolid had a few useful efforts from outside the box, Getafe were full value for the 31st-minute lead given to them by Diaz.

The powerful center-back was left in acres of space inside the Valladolid box to head Esteban Granero's free-kick down past Asenjo, with the visitors left appealing in vain for offside.

Roberto Soldado had a good chance to double Getafe's lead five minutes later when he broke clear of the Valladolid defence after latching onto a hopeful punt forward.

However, the former Real Madrid youth product showed a lack of composure as he sliced his shot wide of the near post with only Asenjo to beat.

Valladolid had been second-best for much of the period but they gave Getafe a scare just before half-time when Pedro Leon's far-post header resulted in a goalmouth scramble, but the home side survived.

Getafe began the second half where they left off in the first, with Granero climbing well only to send a disappointing header over before Albin curled a shot straight into Asenjo's midriff.

Javi Casquero then fired a shot just wide as Getafe looked eager to kill the game off and avoid a repeat of their last home match against Almeria, when they looked in total control only to end up drawing the match.

On that occasion Getafe even boasted a 2-0 lead, but conceded twice in the last two minutes to draw 2-2.

And the host fans must have started to fear the worst as their side's dominance soon waned against Valladolid and the match became a midfield battle with neither side getting the upper hand.

Getafe substitute Ikechukwu Uche gave the home supporters a rare moment of excitement with eight minutes to go when he opened up a shooting chance 12 yards out, but he failed to hit the target with a rising shot.

Uche had another chance soon after when he nicked the ball away from his marker, but this time Asenjo was equal to his low shot.

Getafe may not have been able to make a second breakthrough, but they had few troubles keeping Valladolid out at the other end, and they managed to see out the final few minutes in some comfort to claim the victory.
