Franz Beckenbauer: MLS move "would have made more sense" for Bastian Schweinsteiger

World Cup: Bastian Schweinsteiger, Germany

World Cup winner and longtime Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger's move to Manchester United has been getting plenty of attention, most of it positive.

Don't count another World Cup winner, Franz Beckenbauer, among that crowd.

Beckenbauer, currently honorary president of FC Bayern after a playing and managerial career largely spent at the club, recently questioned Schweinsteiger's move. He said the challenge of adapting to the English Premier League may be a bigger challenge for Schweinsteiger than the veteran is counting on.

"I find it very brave to make a move like this at his age," Beckenbauer was recently quoted as saying about the 30-year-old.

"People know Schweinsteiger at Bayern and know what he can do," Beckenbauer said. "That's not the case in England. He will have to prove himself all over again."

Perhaps most interestingly from this side of the Atlantic, Beckenbauer said the best option for Schweinsteiger was MLS: "A move to MLS would have made more sense."

Of course, Beckenbauer himself has experience playing in the US, with the famous New York Cosmos squad of the 1970s that included Pele.

World Cup winners Kaká, David Villa and Andrea Pirlo have joined MLS teams this season, with other heavily decorated players, including Sebastian Giovinco, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard, also signing on for the current campaign.
