The rumors have swirled for months about whether LA Galaxy attacker Landon Donovan would return to Everton on loan this offseason.
But on Friday, news emerged that one of Donovan’s teammates is also in the crosshairs of Everton manager David Moyes.
Moyes seems keen to bring Galaxy midfielder David Beckham—with whom he played in 1995 at Preston North End—back to the Premier League.
"I would hope that if David wanted to come, he would pick up the phone and call me,'' Moyes told the media on Friday. "If he wanted to come back to the Premier League, he would only need to phone me or Phil [Neville, Beckham’s former Manchester United teammate], and we would be here for him. He knows how to get hold of Phil and he knows how to get hold of me.”
Beckham's contract and his injury last year while on loan with AC Milan mean he couldn't join the Toffees until January 2012. Plus, signing Beckham would require a major financial outlay, though Moyes said he would be willing make the case that it would be money well spent.
"We would have to look into it financially,” he said, “but if he came and said to me, 'I would like to come and play,' I would have to go to the chairman and ask if we could do it, if we think we can make it work by selling enough shirts.''
Beckham is currently on tour with the Galaxy, who lost to A-League side Newcastle Jets in a friendly on Saturday.
"I think it's always nice to be wanted and it's always nice to have options out there and I've always respected David Moyes from the time I've played with him at Preston North End," Beckham said. "Plus I respect him as a manager. It's always nice to be wanted, but I'm a Man. United fan and it's a pretty close rivalry so, I don't know.''
