SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. --
The San Jose Earthquakes won their second preseason game in three days on Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 victory over the Houston Dynamo at Alex G. Spanos Stadium in the Major League Soccer Central Coast Showcase. Cam Weaver and Ryan Johnson each recorded a goal in the second half to lead the Quakes to the win in cool and windy conditions.
Sunday's match saw its first scoring chance in the 20th minute as Houston's Mike Chabala sent a long throw in to the near post that Kei Kamara flicked across the goal face. Brian Mullan ran on and put a head on the ball, but directed his shot high over the crossbar.
Andrew Hainault nearly found the net for the Dynamo in the 26th minute. Chabala sent a free kick to the far post that found Hainault a step in front of his mark. Hainault slid and flicked a shot that found side netting, just wide of a go-ahead tally.
The Earthquakes missed a golden chance in the 61st minute as Darren Huckerby crossed one onto Houston keeper Tally Hall's doorstep. Shea Salinas timed his run perfectly and had a clear shot at the ball, but couldn't connect.
Weaver put the Earthquakes on the board in the 62nd minute. Weaver struck a volley from just a few yards out thanks to a cross from Johnson. The goal was the first allowed by Houston in four pre-season matches.
Johnson upped San Jose's lead to 2-0 in the 69th minute. The rangy striker found plenty of space on the left and dribbled unopposed into the box before booming a low shot to the near post that beat Hall for Johnson's third goal of the MLS Central Coast Showcase.
San Jose all but sealed its result in the 74th minute, as Kamara was sent off with a straight red card for a hard tackle on Nick Garcia in the Earthquakes' box.
