College rankings: Akron still tops, UConn up to No. 2

High-flying Huskies and defender Greg King jumped to the No. 2 spot in this week's poll, supplanting North Carolina.

Ahead of Tuesday night’s clash in College Park, Md., against the University of Maryland, the Connecticut Huskies jumped up to the No. 2 ranking in the latest NSCAA Men’s College Soccer Division 1 poll.

Despite only tying at Marquette over the weekend, the high-flying Huskies (7-0-2) supplanted North Carolina (6-2-0), after the Tar Heels dropped to No. 4 following a loss on the road to Old Dominion.

No. 1 Akron (7-0-1) held serve once again, collecting all 24 first-place votes, while No. 3 Louisville (7-0-2) and No. 5 Tulsa (7-1-0) jumped into the top five. The Zips take to the road for their next three games and will surely get tested away from the cozy confines of Lee Jackson Field.

The Duke Blue Devils (4-2-3) were punished for a poor week – they drew against Elon and lost on the road to Maryland Friday – falling 10 spots to No. 19. Joining Duke in a backslide was Michigan State (7-2-0), down from No. 11 to No. 18 after a rough weekend.

The Terrapins (5-2-1), buoyed by the win over Duke, climbed two spots and enter Tuesday’s game against the Huskies as the No. 6 seed.

No. 12 Butler (8-0-0) remains the only team with an unblemished record in the top 25, having won their first eight games.

Brown’s charge up the rankings continued, as the Bears (6-0-2) check in at No. 13, up four spots. Pennsylvania (7-2-0) added a second Ivy League school to the rankings, coming in at No. 23.

At the bottom, both James Madison (6-1-1) and San Diego State (7-2-1) tied for the 25th most votes, giving this week's rankings a rather unusual twist.
