Chivas maul Revs, earn first-ever win at Gillette

FOXBOROUGH, Mass.—Chivas USA extended their unbeaten run to three games with a 4-0 victory over 10-man New England at Gillette Stadium.

Jesus Padilla scored the first of his two goals to open the scoring for the Red-and-White in the 26th minute. Things went from bad to worse for New England two minutes later after Marko Perovic saw red for lashing out at Ben Zemanski. Justin Braun doubled the lead in the 33rd minute before Padilla grabbed his second three minutes after halftime. Blair Gavin completed the rout with his first MLS goal on 81 minutes to give Chivas USA their first-ever win at Gillette Stadium.

Chivas USA coach Martin Vasquez made one change from Saturday's 1-1 draw at Chicago as he inserted Gerson Mayen on the right wing in place of the suspended Michael Lahoud. Suspensions also forced New England boss Steve Nicol into two changes with Khano Smith and Chris Tierney deployed in a five-man midfield in place of Kheli Dube and Joseph Niouky.

The Red-and-White looked comfortable in possession from the outset, but it took them a quarter of an hour to start threatening the Revolution back line. Braun probably should have scored in the 16th minute from Padilla's teasing cross from left, but he pushed his header wide of the far post. Sacha Kljestan forced Preston Burpo to parry his stinging free kick over the bar four minutes.

Disaster struck New England twice in three minutes as two mistakes handed control of the match to Chivas USA.

Padilla opened the scoring in the 26th minute after a rare piece of direct play from the visitors. Braun flicked on Zach Thornton's goal kick in behind the Revolution back line. Kevin Alston snatched at the clearance, permitting Padilla to streak in, round Burpo and tuck into the vacated net for his second goal of the season.

Marko Perovic compounded the problems by drawing his first MLS red card two minutes later. Zemanski grabbed a handful of Perovic's shirt as the Serbian midfielder tried to wriggle free in midfield. Perovic swung his left arm back twice to clear some space, and the second attempt hit Zemanski in the face. Referee Steven DePiero issued Zemanski a yellow card for his shirt tug before dismissing Perovic.

The active Braun all but sealed the points for the Red-and-White by doubling the lead in the 33rd minute. Mariano Trujillo played the ball inside for Braun on the edge of the area and the Chivas USA embarked on an unchecked run past two Revolution defenders before slotting home at the near post for his second goal of the campaign.

Padilla converted his second goal of the night three minutes after the break to extend the lead to three. The move swept from right to left as Sacha Kljestan played a one-two with Braun just inside the penalty area and dished to the open Padilla to his left. The Chivas USA winger had plenty of time to pick his spot and calmly tucked home.

Gavin spiced up the match as it petered out to its conclusion by curling home his first MLS goal nine minutes before time. The rookie midfielder started the move by playing a quick one-two with Kljestan on the edge of the area. After riding through Pat Phelan's tackle, Gavin received the benefit of a kind bounce and instinctively tucked his effort into the far corner.

New England substitute Kenny Mansally nearly slipped home a consolation goal at the far post in the 85th minute, but Thornton dived to push Mansally's low shot away and ensure Chivas USA completed their night with a clean sheet.
