and had the game's best opportunity in the 68th minute, when 16-year-old forward Abdus Ibrahim was fouled in the area. But Amado Guevara saw the resulting penalty kick saved by Quakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon.
Cannon ended up with his sixth shutout of the year, tying him with Kansas City's Kevin Hartman and Real Salt Lake's Nick Rimando for the league lead.
Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop made four changes to the team that played to a 1-1 draw with the Colorado Rapids the previous weekend. Ryan Cochrane came back into central defense for the suspended Nick Garcia, while Scott Sealy started in his Earthquakes debut in place of Kei Kamara. Darren Huckerby and Francisco Lima also started in their MLS debuts, in place of Kelly Gray and Ivan Guerrero.
Here's Yallop's team: (4-4-2): Joe Cannon - James Riley, Ryan Cochrane, Jason Hernandez, Eric Denton - Darren Huckerby (Kei Kamara 64), Francisco Lima (Kelly Gray 63), Ramiro Corrales, Ronnie O'Brien - Ryan Johnson, Scott Sealy (John Cunliffe 94+). Substitutes Not Used: Ned Grabavoy, Ivan Guerrero, David Monsalves, Shea Salinas
"We got a point on the road, we were under pressure and kind of held our own," said assistant head coach Ian Russell. "[We] got a point and that's good."

Russell was in charge for the match as head coach Frank Yallop was suspended after being ejected from the 1-1 draw with Colorado the previous weekend. Russell said the players felt no extra pressure going into a tough road environment without their usual coach.
"We had a game plan," Russell said. "Obviously for us, me and [goalkeeper coach Jason Batty], it was a little more pressure because we were running it, but we were comfortable."
It was the fourth scoreless draw of the year for San Jose, whose 11 goals scored in 17 games are by far the lowest total in Major League Soccer. Joe Cannon maintained the draw with a penalty kick save from Amado Guevara, the 13th penalty he's saved in his MLS career.
"I think Amado has taken a couple of penalty kicks against me and he's gone both ways," Cannon said. "But judging by his penalty kicks in the past I feel like [left is] his stronger side. To be honest, I think if he puts it where he wants it, I don't think the goalie has too much of a chance. I think he kind of got under it a little bit and I was fortunate enough to wait until he struck it. You take what you know from a player and playing with them for so long. You go with your gut, since if you don't go with your gut, when I sit at the hotel tonight I'll be second-guessing myself."
All three of the Earthquakes' new signings were put into the lineup, though all three came off for substitutes.
"Scott only met the lads yesterday and me and Lima only met at the beginning of the week," Darren Huckerby said. "It was tough. Three days training in two months. You know it's very hard to get into the game but like I say the first one's out of the way now and I'm looking forward to getting back and start playing a few home games and we'll see how it goes."
NEW YORK RED BULLS
The New York Red Bulls saw their winless streak reach four games, the Los Angeles Galaxy coming back to snatch a last-gasp 2-2 draw at Giants Stadium last Saturday. The Red Bulls have 21 points from 17 matches, even with the Wizards, a point behind Toronto FC and two behind D.C. United.
LAST MATCH
The Red Bulls were back home after losing back-to-back matches and seeing their winless run stretch to three games, all on the road. The Galaxy were on a four-game winless run of their own, playing to a draw in their last outing, the second SuperClasico of the year, after back-to-back losses.
In front of the largest single-game attendance in the league this season, the Galaxy took the lead in the 29th minute on Carlos Ruiz's first goal of the season. David Beckham picked out Edson Buddle on the left with a long ball, and after Buddle cut into the area, he floated in a cross and the Guatemalan international headed home.
But just six minutes later the Red Bulls pulled level as Jorge Rojas made his impact in his MLS debut. He played the ball between his legs to Dave van den Bergh and the Dutch midfielder beat LA goalkeeper Steve Cronin inside the near post with a low shot from 35 yards out, his team-leading fifth goal of the year.
Rojas then set up the New York go-ahead goal in the 71st minute. Sending Juan Pablo Angel into the area, the Colombian international dribbled past Galaxy defender Greg Vanney and sent a sublime chip over Cronin for what looked to be the game-winner.
Yet two minutes into stoppage time, Landon Donovan gathered the ball outside the penalty area and looked to flight an inswinging ball for Buddle. It sailed over the forward's head, but curled inside the right-hand post past Jon Conway for his league-leading 12th goal of the year. Donovan almost secured the full three points moments later, but his rasping drive crashed off the left post.
Red Bulls head coach Juan Carlos Osorio made three changes to the team that lost 2-1 to the Kansas City Wizards the previous weekend. Andrew Boyens came back into the team for Chris Leitch in the back, and Dane Richards replaced Luke Sassano in the midfield. Jorge Rojas was given his MLS debut, in an attacking midfield role for Mike Magee.
Here's Osorio's team (4-3-1-2): Jon Conway - Kevin Goldthwaite, Andrew Boyens, Jeff Parke, Dave van den Bergh (Juan Pietravallo 89) - Dane Richards (Hunter Freeman 50), Carlos Mendes, Seth Stammler - Jorge Rojas - Oscar Echeverry (John Wolyniec 63), Juan Pablo Angel. Substitutes Not Used: Chris Leitch, Mike Magee, Zach Thornton, Sinisa Ubiparipovic
"It's a very disappointed locker room. I think we created enough chances to win the game, but unfortunately that wasn't the case. I'm optimistic because there was good play at times but we need to keep improving," said Osorio. "Only time will tell if it's OK to get one point out of a game we should have won."

The Red Bulls came into the match having scored one goal or less in the last 10 league games. While they scored two, they couldn't find a third that would have secured the points.
"Either you bury the game early where you score the third one and we had plenty of opportunities to do so or you kill the game defensively," Dave van den Bergh said. "We failed to do either. A lot of positives, but still you've got to be critical of your own performance and we didn't get a win."
However, after conceding just two goals over a three-game span, the Red Bulls have allowed eight goals in their last three matches.
"We're scoring goals again, getting organized again and we're actually starting to play some football for long periods of time," defender Andrew Boyens said. "Now the mentality really has to be that we need to die on the defensive end, give everything you've got and make sure if we score two goals we're winning games."
Angel scored his second goal in consecutive games, returning to the starting lineup for both after not starting since June 5.
"Juan Pablo is coming back to top form and scored a great goal. He was a handful today and is showing he's back to top form," said Osorio. Said Angel: "I feel better coming back to the game. I feel I've improved the last two games but more importantly, I'm starting to feel better day by day."
In his first game in a Red Bulls uniform, Rojas was put into the central midfield attacking role, playing the entire 90 minutes and was charged with taking most of the team's free kicks and corners. He set up both Red Bulls goals.
"I think at times we played very good football and Jorge shows some signs of a player that has that extra quality," Osorio said. "He slows the game down, he has a lot of patience, he plays quick when he has to, he can take people on, he can play people through. I think some good signs, but we need to keep improving and keep doing better."
