Brown bears teeth as Hull City stun EPL

Brown

Poor old Chelsea. They lose their four-year, 86 game, unbeaten Premier League home record against Liverpool and then realize that Hull City lie in wait to strike another blow on Wednesday!

But for Xabi Alonso's match winning goal for Liverpool in Sunday's table-topping clash at Stamford Bridge that sent Rafa Benitez's team top and proved their credentials as title challengers this season, Chelsea's trip to Hull could have been a battle for number one spot.

As it is, the winner at the KC Stadium might just have to settle for the honor of being Liverpool's closest challengers, but that in itself is an incredible story.

Hull City taking on Chelsea, level on points and with the chance of leap-frogging Roman Abramovich's billionaires in the table? Crazy, but true.

Saturday's 3-0 win at West Brom was Hull's fourth on the spin and Phil Brown's team continue to defy those doubters who insisted that relegation would be the only outcome for the Tigers this season.

Until promotion was achieved last May, Hull's only claim to fame was that it was Europe's biggest city never to play host to top-flight football.

Brown's men are ripping up all those old stories, though, and the manager is a major part of the Hull success story.

As assistant to Sam Allardyce at Bolton, Brown played a key role as the club became a major force in the EPL by adopting the best ideas from sports teams across the globe.

Bolton raided the Miami Dolphins, the Benetton F1 team, England's 2003 Rugby World Cup winning squad and the LA Lakers for the cutting edge ideas and implemented them at the Reebok Stadium.

Brown is adopting the same forward-thinking approach at Hull and, just like Allardyce, he has a vast network of scouts ready to bring him players from every continent.

Hull might get nothing but painful defeats from their next two games against Chelsea and Manchester United, but their success so far is no fluke and they will continue to pull off shocks this season.
