AMSTERDAM — Jermaine Jones injured an ankle ligament in Schalke's German Cup victory on Tuesday, but his Bundesliga club doesn't expect the US midfielder to miss more than two weeks.
The 28-year old, who missed all of last season with a nagging leg injury, was pulled in the 77th minute of the 1-0 win at FSV Frankfurt.
"It's a torn ligament," Miners press officer Christoph Pieper told MLSsoccer.com. "It's difficult to say how long before he can play."
"He will be definitely missing the next game, against Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, and I don't think he will play Tuesday at Hapoel Tel Aviv in the Champions League."
The club's timetable indicates Jones could also miss out on a Nov. 5 visit from St. Pauli, with a trip to Wolfsburg the following week a better bet for his return.
"Probably within 10-14 days, he can play again," Pieper said. "It definitely could be worse."
Jones, who has two U.S. national team caps, has notched a goal and two assists in 12 matches across all competitions this term.
The injury could put into doubt Jones' participation in the US national team's next match. The Yanks are scheduled to play South Africa in Cape Town on Nov. 17.
