American Exports: Holden, Bolton rout Newcastle

AMSTERDAM – It was another busy Saturday for Americans in Europe, with Stuart Holden putting in a solid shift as Bolton thumped Newcastle 5-1 to grab tentative hold of fourth place.


Elsewhere in the England's Premier League, Wolverhampton Marcus Hahnemann had an off-day, with a missed cross setting up Blackpool's 2-1 win at home.


Jonathan Spector was an unused sub in West Ham United's 3-0 loss at Liverpool.


Two flights down in League One, Mike Grella opened the scoring by cleaning up the rebound of right back Frank Simek's drive, but Carlisle eventually fell 2-1 at Walsall.


In Bundesliga action, Michael Bradley assisted on the icebreaker and saw yellow as home side Borussia Mönchengladbach dropped a tough 3-2 decision to Mainz 05.


However, DaMarcus Beasley did not leave the bench as Hannover 96 climbed to fourth place with a wild 3-2 triumph over visiting regional rivals Hamburg and Ricardo Clark went unused in Eintracht Frankfurt's 4-0 defeat to rude guests Hoffenheim.


Over in France's Ligue 1, Carlos Bocanegra returned to left back for 90 minutes of Saint-Étienne's 1-1 home draw against Auxerre.


In La Liga, Jozy Altidore watched from the dugout as Villarreal battled derby guests Valencia to a 1-all draw.


Heading to Belgium's Jupiler League, Sacha Kljestan was a 25th minute injury replacement for Anderlecht captain Lucas Biglia in a 1-0 victory at Germinal Beerschot.


Finally, Eugene Starikov worked 87 minutes as Tom Tomsk closed the Russian Premier League season in eighth place – their best finish since 2006 – with a 1-0 win at Sibir Novosibirsk.
