Adu exit from Greek club Aris FC likely

Greek club Aris say that US int'l Adu no longer fits into their plans.

Freddy Adu's time in Greece may soon be over.

MLSsoccer.com has learned that Greek club Aris FC may be pondering returning the American attacker to Portuguese side Benfica.

Despite having a season remaining on his loan deal, the 21-year old US international has seen writing on the wall after Aris manager Hector Cuper omitted him from the roster for the club's preseason trip to Austria.

"It was a decision of Mr. Cuper," Aris press officer Christanthos Tsaltidis told MLSsoccer.com. "He might leave. The club may tell him to go back to Benfica because he is not in Mr. Cuper's plans."

After arriving in January, Adu notched a goal and two assists in nine appearances with Aris last term. However, he was mostly bench-ridden in the season’s closing games before seeing some action in the playoffs.

The American had been looking forward to entering Europa League play with Aris, but now faces increased speculation about his future.

At this time, it seems unlikely that Portuguese champs Benfica will consider him for the first team, meaning Adu could wind up as a summer transfer sale item.
