Dr. Marshall Leonard, a former New England Revolution defender, is on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic at a New York-area hospital after completing his residency.

As busy as that’s kept Leonard, he recently joined former Revolution teammate and ESPN soccer analyst Taylor Twellman for a segment on Outside the Lines. Leonard has a message for Americans, too, during the era of social distancing.

“Do what you can right now, I know that it’s tough,” Leonard said. “I’m in it with you at home. It’s something awkward and completely opposite of what we want to do. We want to be close. Being apart and not being next to anybody is important.”

Leonard spent six seasons with the Revolution, highlighted by a U.S. Open Cup title in 2007. He also helped them make four MLS Cup appearances, though a title proved elusive.

As supported as Leonard may have felt during his 63 MLS games, he’s encountered a different lift during his new career. Leonard has seen the widespread videos of citizens cheering on medical professionals, who witness COVID-19’s brutal impact every day.

“I will say that we’re hearing it,” Leonard said. “We’re hearing it loud and clear, and we’re going to keep going. There’s nothing that’s going to stop us, and we just have to keep fighting."
