After shaking off some of the competitive rust with a scrimmage against the New York Red Bulls on Thursday, the Philadelphia Union take on the University of South Florida Bulls in their first formal preseason match on Saturday night.

Facing a collegiate side should give the Union's defensive reserves a chance to gain some confidence with center backs Auston Trusty and Mark McKenzie both away on US national team duty.

Against the Red Bulls Thursday, that meant an extended look for academy player Cole Turner, who is expected to play as a freshman at Navy next fall.

The Bulls are a program that prides itself on producing professional players. Former Union and current Red Bulls midfielder Marcus Epps is one of four alums currently in MLS, alongside Orlando striker Dom Dwyer, NYCFC defender Ben Sweat and Portland goalkeeper Jeff Attinella.

Their spring itinerary shows that ambition, with defending USL Cup winners Louisville City and local USL club Tampa Bay Rowdies also on the schedule.
