When Mexico steps onto the field for their next World Cup game, Carlos Vela will be playing with a heavy heart.

The Mexican striker and LAFC star shared on Instagram that his grandfather passed away after watching Mexico’s huge upset of defending World Cup champion Germany on Sunday.

Vela was instrumental in El Tri’s opening World Cup victory with head coach Juan Carlos Osorio calling him “one of our best players.”

Now in position to win Group F, Mexico faces South Korea on Saturday before closing group play vs. Sweden next Wednesday.
