Real Salt Lake 1, Minnesota United FC 0 | 2017 MLS Match Recap

An 84th-minute goal by substitute Yura Movsisyan was enough for Real Salt Lake to edge Minnesota United FC 1-0 at Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday night. Despite a 29-5 shot advantage for the home team, it took Movsisyan's late-game conversion of a corner kick to overcome heroic goalkeeping from Minnesota's Bobby Shuttleworth.

The win moves RSL closer to the playoff line, reserving course from a Texas two-misstep that saw Mike Petke's squad lose 6-2 to FC Dallas and 5-1 to the Dynamo. Meanwhile, for Minnesota, it's their 4th loss in five matches, and the second straight in which they've been shut out.

Three Things

  1. SUPER SUB: Yura Movsisyan replaced an unlucky Luis Silva (who had a sure first half goal blocked by a sliding Sam Cronin) in the 70th minute, and had an immediate impact on the match. He played to the whistle on the gameā€™s only goal, and had a potential insurance goal go wide in stoppage time.
  2. LET THE KIDS PLAY: Coach Mike Petke started two of the standout RSL players from the U.S. U-20 World Cup squad ā€“ defender Justen Glad and midfielder Brooks Lennon ā€“ as well as Honduran-born defender Danilo Acosta. Glad and Brooks put in full, solid shifts, while Acosta went off in the 79th minute for another member of the RSL youth movement, Sebastian Saucedo.
  3. FACING A BARRAGE: It wasnā€™t an easy night for Loonsā€™ keeper Bobby Shuttleworth. The 29 shots included 9 on goal, and RSL kept pressure on with 10 corner kicks. But Shuttleworth made worthy saves throughout the match, keeping his team in it until the dam finally burst late in the contest.
