Jozy Altidore is tied for third place in the early going for the 2017 MLS Golden Boot race with five goals, two of which came in Toronto FC’s 2-0 win over the Houston Dynamo on April 28. Altidore now has seven career two-goal games in MLS and and since returning to MLS from Europe in 2015, he’s scored 28 goals in 56 games, plus another five goals in seven MLS Cup playoff games.
For his entire MLS career – including his time in the league before leaving the Red Bulls for Europe in 2008 – Altidore has 43 goals on 164 shots in 93 appearances. His scoring percentage of 26.2 is the most successful strike rate in MLS history among players with 20 goals or more.
Altidore's average rate of a goal every 150 minutes on the pitch puts him in the top 10 all time, and his rate of .61 goals per 90 minutes is eighth among players with at least 40 goals. Former Columbus hitman Stern John is the all-time leader with .89 goals per 90 minutes, and among active players, only New York Red Bulls striker Bradley Wright-Phillips (.71), NYCFC striker David Villa (.69) and Toronto FC teammate Sebastian Giovinco (.65) have a better average per 90 minutes than Altidore.
