Eight MLS players named to US U-20 national team roster for final foreign camp of 2014

New Columbus Crew signing Romain Gall in action for US

Eight MLS players have been named to the US U-20 national team’s roster for their final foreign training camp ahead of the 2015 CONCACAF Under-20 Championship in January, head coach Tab Ramos announced Friday.

Nineteen players in all are headed to the camp in Honduras from Dec. 15-22 that will feature matches against the Honduras U-20s on Dec. 18 and 21 at the Estadio Francisco Morazan in San Pedro Sula.

The USA roster features nine of the 10 players who took part in the U-20’s recent domestic fitness camp from Dec. 3-10 in Bradenton, Fla.

The group also includes midfielders Russell Canouse and the Columbus Crew’s Romain Gall, who are the only two players to feature in all seven of the U-20’s international matches this year.

Canouse, of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, leads the team with six starts and Gall is tied for third on the U-20s with two goals, both of which came during the USA’s 4-3 victory against Russia’s U-21 national team on Nov. 12 in Marbella, Spain.

The goalkeeping tandem of the New York Red Bulls’ Santiago Castaño and Zack Steffen has accounted for six of the USA’s seven starts this year. Castaño had a clean sheet during the USA’s 1-0 win against the Republic of Ireland on Nov. 15.

The USA roster includes 18 players with ties to the Development Academy.

Following the Honduras camp, the U-20s will hold a pre-World Cup qualifying camp in Florida before departing for the CONCACAF U-20 Championship in Jamaica.

The USA open Group A play at the CONCACAF U-20 Championship against Guatemala on Jan. 9 at Independence Park in Kingston, Jamaica.
