DC United's Ben Olsen confirms Eddie Johnson "day-to-day" with concussion symptoms

D.C. United fans hoping for the return of Eddie Johnson on Wednesday evening against the Red Bulls (8 pm ET; ESPN2) will have to keep on waiting.

Johnson missed United’s 0-0 draw at Vancouver on Saturday evening with post-concussive symptoms and hasn’t trained with the club since then. After his club’s Tuesday morning training session, United head coach Ben Olsen confirmed that the striker won’t be traveling for Wednesday evening’s encounter with the New York Red Bulls.

Johnson suffered the concussion during a training session last week, Olsen confirmed, taking a “knock” while going up for a header. The team has monitored him closely since the incident, and Johnson has been through the full battery of tests given to players with suspected concussions.

United will likely rely on the tandem of Fabian Espindola and Luis Silva up top, a duo that has performed exceedingly well in recent weeks. Johnson last saw action as a substitute in United’s 2-0 defeat of the Red Bulls on Aug. 31, helping secure the victory with a late insurance tally.

As with any concussion, Johnson won’t return until team doctors deem it safe for him to take the pitch. On Tuesday, Olsen stated that his timetable is “day to day.”
