MLS Fantasy Advice: Is Landon Donovan a must-have the rest of the season? You make the choice

TRANSFER DEADLINE: Friday, 10:30 pm ET

Is Landon Donovan a 'must-have' the rest of the season?

LA Galaxy star and former US international, Landon Donovan, announced his retirement from professional soccer on Wednesday afternoon. He will finish out the 2014 regular season plus the ensuing playoff games (should LA qualify).

Barring injury and suspension – which Donovan rarely has to deal with anyway, although he is two yellow cards shy of an accumulation suspension – the MLS Fantasy midfielder has 15 regular-season games left to go out with a bang.

All of which got me wondering, with Donovan currently in fine form, notching one goal, three assists and 26 total points in his last two regular season appearances, is he a "must-have" for your team the rest of the way?

Here's how Donovan ranks overall and from a positional standpoint in MLS Fantasy as of Friday...

  • Total Score  –106 points (T-10th overall, T-4th among midfielders)
  • Points per Game – 6.2 points (T-12th overall, T-5th among midfielders)
  • Form* – 7.0 (T-5th overall, T-3rd among midfielders)

*average points per game during the past 30 days

Donovan is currently the sixth-most transferred IN player in MLS Fantasy Manager this round. He has double-game weeks coming up in Rounds 24, 25 and 27. In my opinion, he needs to be on your team during those DGWs, if not sooner.

It won't be cheap, though. LD is the fourth-most expensive player in the game right now at $10.9m, after increasing by $0.1m on Thursday night. He just scored the game-winning goal in the AT&T MLS All-Star Game to knock off Bayern Munich. He's on the top of his game right now.

But don't let me hype him up for you. We want to hear what you think. Is Donovan really a "must-have" player down the stretch? Will you be adding him to your team?
