MLS president downplays reported Queens stadium renderings

Flushing Meadows in Queens

Was that an official rendering of the proposed stadium for the MLS expansion team in Queens that was splashed all over the blogosphere on Monday?

The answer is “no,” according to Major League Soccer.

"These drawings do not represent what the stadium will look like,"  MLS president Mark Abbott said in a statement on Monday after being contacted by MLSsoccer.com. "In fact, we haven't selected an architect yet and will not start the design process until we have an owner for the club. This was simply a concept drawing that was done only to help determine the potential height and footprint.  Any assertion that these drawings represent what a stadium will look like in Queens is wrong.”

On Monday, the New York Post and several blogs reported on conceptual drawings from SHoP Architects, describing the images as a "First Look" at the proposed facility. The reports sparked a maelstrom on Twitter and other social media outlets, but it turns out there was little to it all in the end.
