Recap: Dallas capitalize on late error to top Chivas 2-1

FC Dallas' Brek Shea (left) and Chivas USA's Michael Lahoud both tallied on Saturday.

CARSON, Calif. — FC Dallas successfully bounced back from a defeat last week by with a 2-1 road victory over Chivas USA at the Home Depot Center on Saturday.

A late goal from Dallas' Jackson Gonçalves canceled out a second-half equalizer from Chivas defender Michael Lahoud to give FCD their 10th result in 11 matches. Left winger Brek Shea had put FCD up in the first half with his sixth goal of the season.

Chivas USA dominated the first 20 minutes of the match, but were unable to put away any of their scoring chances.

With the home team struggling to find the net, it was the visitors who struck first. In the 22nd minute of play, midfielder Andrew Jacobson fired in a looping ball to Shea, who was able to beat Chivas USA defender Michael Umaña on the run and then powered in shot to give Dallas the lead.

The Rojiblancos came close to equalizing 10 minutes later when Nick LaBrocca fired from 10 yards that required Dallas captain Daniel Hernandez put his body on the line and make a save.

FCD nearly extended their lead in 37th minute when forward Fabián Castillo broke free of his marker and fired a shot that forced Dan Kennedy to make a point-blank save to keep the score 1-0 heading into the locker rooms at halftime.

In the second half, Dallas remained in control as their stingy defense did well to prevent a Chivas USA equalizer. In turn, the visitors were unlucky not to extend their lead in the 62nd minute of play when Castillo used his speed to blaze by a lone defender and fire a shot that Kennedy just barely tipped to send it crashing onto the back post and out.

Chivas USA found their equalizer in the 71st when, off a corner kick, Lahoud fired a shot from 30 yards out that appeared to take a deflection of FC Dallas defender George John before beating Dallas goalkeeper Kevin Hartman. The goal was the first of the season for Lahoud and the second of his career.

While the Rojiblancos savored the equalizer, Dallas nearly struck back just eight minutes later. Hernandez struck a free kick from 32 yards that forced Kennedy to make a fingertip save, but the Goats again needed the post to keep FCD from tallying their second.

In the 85th minute, though, the post turned FCD's best friend when second-half sub Jackson took advantage of a defensive breakdown from Chivas to get through two defenders to score the winning goal.

Chivas USA will now prepare for an away tilt against the Philadelphia Union on June 25, while FC Dallas return to Pizza Hut Park to host the Portland Timbers on the same day.
