Sporting KC trio earn Gold Cup berths

The emergence of Stephane Auvray has helped the Wizards defensively.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — One thing is sure: Kansas City will be well represented in next summer’s Gold Cup.

Craig Rocastle (Grenada), Stephane Auvray (Guadeloupe) and Shavar Thomas (Jamaica) all qualified for the 2011 CONCACAF championship with their respective national teams through the recently completed Digicel Caribbean Cup.

Mexico and the United States have already qualified, and Honduras and Roger Espinoza (Honduras) could earn a spot through January’s Copa Centroamericana as well. The Gold Cup runs from June 5 to June 25, meaning Sporting could also open its new stadium on June 9 without a full roster.

“It’s a two sided coin,” Sporting KC manager Peter Vermes said. “It’s positive on one side and negative on the other. It’s great that those guys are international players, their level is good and they have a connection to their national team and that level of competition.

"That’s always a welcome thing because they bring that back to their professional team. The difficulty on that is you lose those guys and all of a sudden those guys are not are not around that tends to take away some of your continuity."
