Last Game

Earthquakes 3, Chicago Fire 3; April 11, 2009; Buck Shaw Stadium: Santa Clara, Calif. The San Jose Earthquakes and the Chicago Fire played to a 3-3 draw. The home side took the lead on three different occasions, only to see the Fire come back each time, with Chris Rolfe's strike with five minutes remaining giving the visitors the last word. San Jose goals from Ryan Johnson and Bobby Convey, sandwiched around Marco Pappa's effort put the home side 2-1 up at halftime. Chicago equalized yet again through Brian McBride, only to see Arturo Alvarez's 75th-minute penalty give the Quakes the lead. But the ejection of San Jose's Shea Salinas for two bookable offenses breathed new life into the visitors, and the Fire made the Quakes pay courtesy of Rolfe's heroics, keeping Chicago unbeaten on the 2009 season. For the first goal, defender Chris Leitch's inch-perfect 50-yard pass found Darren Huckerby in stride on the left, with the Englishman's exquisite first touch leaving Brandon Prideaux in his wake. Huckerby's low centering feed was then scrambled over the line by Johnson for his second goal of the season. The Fire secured an equalizer in the 41st minute. A pass to Logan Pause caught the Quakes defense over-shifted, and his slide-rule pass found a wide-open Pappa, who fired his shot past Joe Cannon in the San Jose goal. But no sooner had Chicago finished celebrating when San Jose reclaimed the lead. Convey pounced on a loose ball in the attacking half, and after evading two Fire defenders, slotted his shot under Busch to make the score 2-1 in favor of the home side. Chicago head coach Denis Hamlett brought on Cuauhtémoc Blanco to start the second half, and this change seemed to benefit Chicago as they capped off a spell of sustained pressure with a brilliant strike from McBride in the 56th minute. A long pass was headed by Blanco towards McBride, and his deft takedown and quick turn saw him deposit his shot past Cannon. That is until the 74th minute, when a ball over the top saw Convey get on the wrong side of Robinson and then was bundled over by the Chicago defender. Alvarez easily dispatched the spot kick to give the home side the lead for the third time in the match. San Jose were then forced to play with 10 men when Salinas earned his second yellow card of the match for delaying a restart in the 81st minute, and Chicago quickly made the man advantage pay off, with Rolfe's bullet shot from distance giving the Fire a share of the points. The Quakes remain at home next weekend, making the trek to Oakland where they will take on the LA Galaxy at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum in the first game between the in-state rivals this season.

Last Match vs. Los Angeles

Earthquakes 3, Los Angeles Galaxy 2; August 3, 2008; Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum: Oakland, Calif. The San Jose Earthquakes earned a 3-2 victory over the LA Galaxy at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. The Quakes had opened a two-goal lead in the first half, as Arturo Alvarez and Darren Huckerby scored. But before the half was out, Landon Donovan pulled a goal back for the Galaxy, then late in the second half, Edson Buddle netted a score for LA that seemed to secure the point, until Ryan Cochrane's late heroics. In the eighth minute, Alvarez opened the scoring. From the left wing, Huckerby centered a pass to Scott Sealy at the top of the penalty area. Sealy's one-touch pass found Alvarez racing up the middle, and he bent a left-footed shot past Galaxy goalkeeper Steve Cronin cleanly inside the right post. San Jose doubled its lead in the 40th minute when Eric Denton knocked the ball forward for Huckerby. LA defender Chris Klein slipped, allowing Huckerby to come in alone on goal from the left wing. From a tough angle, Huckerby's shot slid past Cronin to the far post for a 2-0 Earthquakes advantage. LA then battled back, getting a goal back almost immediately. In the 42nd minute, a David Beckham free kick from 35 yards out found Donovan for a header from six yards out. Earthquakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon made the save, pushing the ball off the crossbar, but San Jose couldn't clear the rebound. The ball got back out to Beckham on the right wing, and he sent another cross to the net. This time, Donovan's header from the top of the six cleanly beat Cannon inside the left post for his league-leading 13th goal of the year. The Galaxy got their equalizer after Edson Buddle got the ball about 30 yards from goal. Buddle danced through the San Jose defense, taking advantage of a collision between defenders Nick Garcia and Cochrane to score from 20 yards out. But in the end, it was San Jose coming out on top. In the waning moments, a Corrales cross from the right wing was knocked away by Cronin, and Huckerby pounced on the loose ball. Huckerby's shot from 15 yards out shot was saved, but the rebound fell to Cochrane, who put it away to give San Jose the win.

This was Johnson's seventh career goal and number 18 for Alvarez. Johnson tallied the first of the match in the 14th minute off of an assist from Darren Huckerby. Huckerby had a great touch from a deep ball off the foot of Chris Leitch and slid the ball across the face of the goal past a sprawling Jon Busch, where Johnson slid to knock it in the back of the net. Alvarez gave the Quakes a 3-2 lead in the 75th minute on a penalty kick.

After the Quakes practice concluded, the boys from Luton Town were able to meet many of the Quakes players, get autographs and take pictures.

History of the Quakes-Galaxy Rivalry

As the two original MLS teams in California, the Earthquakes (then known as the Clash) and the Galaxy met for the first time in league history on April 28, 1996 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. In front of a crowd of 40,347, the Clash fell to the Galaxy 2-1. From 1996-2005, the two teams met each other more than any other teams in the league. Along with playing each other 41 times in the regular season, the Quakes and the Galaxy have also met eight times in the playoffs and four times in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The teams squared off in the playoffs in 1996, 2001, 2003 and 2005 ... The Galaxy captured the 1996 three-game series two games to one, winning the final two games of the series at the Rose Bowl ... In 2001, the two teams met in MLS Cup with the Quakes earning a 2-1 overtime win. Dwayne De Rosario scored the winning goal in overtime for San Jose ... The 2003 playoff series between the Galaxy and the Quakes produced one of the most memorable games in league history. After losing the opening game of the two-game aggregate goal series 2-0, San Jose fell behind 2-0 in the second game to trail 4-0 overall in the series. However, the Earthquakes responded with four goals in regulation to tie the series 4-4. Chris Ronér tied the series in the 90th minute. Rodrigo Faria then scored six minutes into overtime to send San Jose to the Western Conference Championship game. The Quakes would go on to win the 2003 MLS Cup ... 2005 marked the end of the line for the Quakes. After losing the first leg of the Western Conference Semifinals 3-1 to the Galaxy at The Home Depot Center, the Quakes needed another two-goal comeback to win the series. After going up 1-0 on a Brian Ching goal in game two on Oct. 29, 2005, Ned Grabavoy scored for the Galaxy to end the Quakes hopes. That match marked the Earthquakes final game before the team was relocated to Houston on Dec. 15, 2005.
