Weekly update: A familiar face

RSL original Clint Mathis returns to Salt Lake City Saturday afternoon.

SALT LAKE CITY - Real Salt Lake (2-5-1, 7 pts., 4th West) continues its three game homestand this week, welcoming RSL original MF Clint Mathis and the Colorado Rapids to Rice-Eccles Stadium this Saturday (2:00 p.m. MT, live on ESPN2). RSL enters the contest looking to win a third consecutive game for the first time in franchise history and aiming to capture the opening contest of the annual "Rocky Mountain Cup," a rivalry created by the supporter clubs of Real Salt Lake and the Colorado Rapids.

RSL continued its strong play last Saturday, coming from behind with two goals late in the second half to capture a 2-1 victory over the Kansas City Wizards, vaulting RSL into a fourth-place tie with the Los Angeles Galaxy (7 points each). The win represented RSL's second consecutive victory and was the team's first-ever against and MLS Eastern Conference foe, with three ties against the New York organization the only other East results.

RSL rookie MF Mehdi Ballouchy tallied the first goal of his professional career as he captured the game's equalizer in the 78th minute. Timing his run perfectly, Ballouchy found himself in great position in front of the goal as he slammed home a line-drive cross from RSL MF Chris Klein. RSL striker Jeff Cunningham nailed down the game winner only two minutes later as he beat Kansas City Goalkeeper Bo Oshoniyi from a near impossible angle on the right side of the box, 18 yards away from the goal. Cunningham, coming off Head Coach John Ellinger's bench for the second consecutive game, has now tallied three goals in his last 55 minutes on the field and has four total goals on the year, tied for fourth overall in MLS.
