Wake's Jon Bakero, SuperDraft prospect, wins Hermann Trophy

Jon Bakero -- College Cup -- Celebration

Wake Forest senior forward Jon Bakero, who has signed an MLS contract and is likely to be selected in the early stages of the MLS SuperDraft later this month, was presented with the 2017 MAC Hermann Trophy as the nation's top male collegiate player on Friday night.

Bakero, whose father Jose Mari Bakero starred for Barcelona and Real Sociedad during a 17-year professional career, scored 16 goals and added 14 assists to post the second-highest scoring season for a single player in Wake Forest history.

He becomes the second straight Wake player to earn the award. (Ian Harkes, who went on to join D.C. United on a Homegrown Player contract, took the 2016 honor).

Baker beat out Stanford defender Tomas Hilliard-Arce and Indiana defender Grant Lillard for the honor. Like Bakero, Hilliard-Arce has also signed an MLS deal ahead of the draft.
