Third Annual RSL/United Way Kickoff Luncheon set for April 2

SALT LAKE CITY - Real Salt Lake is pleased to announce that tickets for the Third Annual RSL Kickoff Luncheon are now on sale. RSL is teaming up once again with the United Way of Salt Lake for the yearly event, which will take place Monday, April 2, from 11:30 AM -2:00 PM at the Salt Lake City Marriot, located at 75 South, West Temple.

This year's luncheon will feature Frank Layden, one of Utah's most beloved sports figures, as the headline speaker. Layden served as the Head Coach/General Manager of the Utah Jazz for seven 1/2 years, starting with the team while still in New Orleans in 1981, and ending in Salt Lake when he retired in 1988.

He is the only coach in Jazz history to be named the NBA's Coach of the Year (1984). He is also the only person in Jazz history to win NBA Executive of the Year and the only non-player in NBA history to win the NBA's J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award.

Layden has long been known for his charismatic wit and side splitting sense of humor. It was his dynamic personality that landed him as co-host of 2 volumes of Dazzling Dunks and Basketball Bloopers produced by NBA Entertainment in 1989. He is one of the more quotable figures in basketball, and continues to be a sought after public speaker all around the nation.

He resides in Salt Lake City with his wife of 45 years, Barbra. They are the proud parents of three children, and the proud grandparents of 10 granddaughters.

This year's Luncheon will also feature a fashion show starring RSL players and coaches, accompanied by their families. The "models" will be decked out in gear from Dillard's, Lucky Pirate Denim Bar, 10, Bastille, Calle, RSL, Cherella and more. René Magazine, Salt Lake's newly launched fashion magazine, will also be on hand documenting a behind the scenes look of the fashion show and luncheon. Following the show, a select number of clothing worn by the players will be added to the silent auction, allowing members of the community to bid on the outfits, giving RSL another resource to raise money for the United Way.

"It's a chance for the public to see players and coaches in a different light," said Jamie Barton, Director of Community Relations and Events.

"This year we wanted to put a little more of the RSL personality into our Luncheon and show our fans how personable and accessible our players are. I think it will be a lot of fun, and it adds another way to raise extra money for our partner, the United Way of Salt Lake."
