B.J. Callaghan Proving to Be a Knockout Hire

Since becoming the Nashville SC head coach in July 2024, B.J. Callaghan has taken the club to new heights, building off his managerial success in knockout competitions.

Callaghan’s coaching expertise here goes all the way back to his days as an academy coach with the Philadelphia Union when he helped guide them to a 2012 Generation adidas Cup championship. In his time as a professional manager with both the U.S. Men’s National Team and Nashville SC, Callaghan has only lost three knockout games in regulation and has a 13-3-7 overall record. That was on display last year in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup when Nashville went 5-0-0 and took home their first trophy as a club.

In 2026, the club has taken another step and reached the Concacaf Champions Cup semifinals without dropping a game so far (3-0-3). The next test for Callaghan’s knockout formula will be Tigres UANL on Tuesday night when they host them in the first leg at GEODIS Park (8:30 p.m. ET, FS2).

For the first time in MLS play, former German national teammates Marco Reus (LA Galaxy) and Thomas Müller will square off in an exciting Western Conference clash.

The duo played together 33 times for Die Mannschaft and Reus was one of the first people to welcome Müller to North America when he signed last summer. Now, friends return to rivals as Saturday marks the 36th match against one another with the former FC Bayern legend Müller holding a 22-8-5 record against Reus, even though Reus has more goals and assists in those games (19 to 18).

It should be a thrilling affair between the global soccer legends as the next step of the rivalry gets underway at 10:30 p.m. ET on Saturday night at Dignity Health Sports Park when the LA Galaxy welcome Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

The Quakes' Perfect Storm

The San Jose Earthquakes took six points last week by defeating Austin FC 5-1 at home then responding to a 2-1 deficit in St. Louis to net a 3-2 victory. With those wins, the Quakes hot start has seen them become the first team in the post-shootout era of MLS to win nine of their first ten games to begin a season.

The Quakes have been powered by the magic of second-year manager Bruce Arena and superstar signee Timo Werner, whose three goal contributions on Saturday night saw him become the first player in club history to register a goal and an assist in three-straight games. Werner has netted four goals and five assist across his first 455 MLS minutes.

San Jose will look to continue their hot start with a trip north of the border on Saturday when they will face a resurgent Toronto FC squad that will look to avenge their first defeat in seven matches (1:00 p.m. ET, MLS on Apple TV).

Anibal Godoy’s Decade-Long MLS Career Culminates in World Cup

The Pitch MD10_Godoy

More than 250 appearances, over a decade in MLS, and a key cog in San Diego FC’s record-setting expansion season, Aníbal Godoy’s terrific career will reach an apex at FIFA World Cup 2026 on North American soil.

A true great in North American soccer history, Godoy is the most capped player in Panamanian men’s soccer history and will captain the squad in this year’s World Cup. Throughout his career, the bullish midfielder has set the tone at every one of his stops. In his first MLS stop with the Earthquakes he rose to become one of the club’s captains before heading to Nashville as the fifth signing in club history. He helped Nashville go from expansion side to Leagues Cup finalist and endearing himself to fans along the way.

Now with San Diego and coming off a historic expansion season, Godoy will lead a Panama team in their second World Cup appearance and aiming to get out of the group stage for the first time. It will be a tough task against Croatia, England, and Ghana, but the 36-year-old is not one to shy away from it and being on familiar soil will help.

The game’s biggest tournament is just weeks away and Godoy will look to keep the positive momentum heading towards the summer when San Diego FC host LAFC on Walmart Saturday Showdown (9:30 p.m. ET, MLS on Apple TV).
