Cavan Sullivan is making the sensational a routine, weekly occurrence.
During the Philadelphia Union's Sunday Night Soccer presented by Continental Tire visit to San Diego FC, Sullivan continued that trend in stunning fashion, breaking the deadlock mere moments before the halftime whistle.
With the bright lights of Sunday Night Soccer shining down on him, Philadelphia's young star answered the call, streaking into the 18-yard box before latching onto a low cross from Indiana Vassilev and depositing a sensational backheel-flicked finish just inside the far post.
Make it two
The teenage midfielder wasn't done there, tacking on his second goal of the night in the 62nd minute. After taking a pass from Vassilev, Sullivan ripped his strike past Duran Ferree from a tight angle to power the Union into a 2-0 lead in front of a rowdy road SDFC crowd.
The lights weren't too bright for Sullivan on the night, as he recorded his first-ever MLS brace in an eventual 5-0 rout.
"First brace, it was pretty cool," Sullivan told Apple TV postmatch. "I’m really happy to score those ones, but, like I said, three points matters the most.
Torrid pace
The brace brings the 16-year-old phenom to 16 goal contributions (6g/10a) this season, with an incredible 5g/7a coming in the last seven matches. He leads the Union in assists, while his goal tally is tied for second on the squad.
Sullivan recently made history by breaking Freddie Adu's record for most goal contributions by a player 16 years old or younger in a single MLS season.
A highly-touted prospect for many years, it comes as no surprise that Sullivan's breakout MLS campaign has fueled calls from fans and pundits across the country who believe the youngster is ready to break into the US men's national team picture.
His latest performance against SDFC has only continued to further his case for inclusion in Pochettino's USMNT fall roster.
