Seattle Sounders 0, Sporting Kansas City 1 | 2016 MLS Match Recap

Jordan Morris made his MLS debut for the Seattle Sounders, but Oniel Fisher's red card left them a man down for more than half of an eventual 1-0 loss to Sporting Kansas City. Nuno Andre Coelho punched in a shot from well outside the box, short-hopping Seattle 'keeper Stefan Frei, who failed to block it as he dove to stop the shot. The Sounders were able to create several chances in both halves only to be foiled by faulty touch or superb goalkeeping from SKC's Tim Melia.

Box Score

Three Things

  1. Sporting Strikes (…) Finally
Playing a man up for the final 50 minutes, Sporting Kansas City was eventually able to sneak a shot past Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei in the 73rd minute, earning the full three points on the road. It came from recent signing Coelho, who finished off what apparently was a 30-pass buildup!

  2. Melia Making His Case
After earning 2015 Comeback Player of the Year honors, SKC 'keeper Tim Melia continued building on last season's run of strong play. The highlight? This fingertip stretch to deny a Clint Dempsey free kick early in the match. A goal there, and this is a very different game.

  3. JoMo Debuts

That kinda night for the kid. But you can see him thinking things – fun, creative, opportunistic things. The instincts are there. The timing and execution will come.

They Said It

"Such is the life of a goalkeeper, you know. You make a mistake and the whole team pays for it."
—Stefan Frei, Seattle Sounders GK
