Toronto FC’s trio of new Designated Players will be less one for their season opener Saturday at the Seattle Sounders (4:30 pm ET; NBCSN, TSN/RDS2 in Canada).
The Toronto Sun reported Thursday that Gilberto, Toronto’s prized Brazilian striker, didn’t travel to Seattle with the team late Wednesday night as he continues his recovery from a hip flexor injury suffered during the preseason.
The 24-year-old, brought in as a Designated Player this offseason, has only briefly appeared in one preseason game for the Reds, and earlier this week head coach Ryan Nelsen told the Sun he’s two weeks away from being match fit.

Toronto’s other two DPs, meanwhile, USMNT midfielder Michael Bradley and English national team forward Jermain Defoe, have been training this week and are expected to play.
TFC didn't immediately respond to an MLSsoccer.com request for comment.
