The New York Red Bulls winless streak extended to 16 games in all competitions, with a 2-0 loss to Chivas USA at Giants Stadium on Saturday night.
Maykel Galindo scored the game's first goal in the 15th minute, sending the Red-and-White on their way as they snapped a five-game MLS losing streak.
Galindo collected a pass from Chukwudi Chijindu, taking one touch and firing a left-footed shot past Red Bulls goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul from 10 yards.
Eduardo Lillingston added an insurance goal two minutes into second-half stoppage time, tapping a pass from Michael Lahoud into the open net.
Two minutes after Galindo's goal John Wolyniec got on the end of an Ernst Oebster cross, but he bounced his 10-yard header wide to Zach Thornton's left.
Jesse Marsch, making his 100th appearance with the Red-and-White, nearly doubled his team's lead, taking a pass from Sacha Kljestan and targeting the upper left corner of the net. But Coundoul, in his second start, made an acrobatic save in the 21st minute.
Just past the half-hour mark, the Red Bulls had a golden opportunity to equalize. Seth Stammler sprung Dane Richards who was streaking down the right. But the Jamaican international rolled a first-time attempt just wide of the far post.
Kljestan became the second player in referee Kevin Stott's book when he was given a yellow card for simulation after falling to the turf following contact with Coundoul in the opening minute of first-half stoppage time.
In the 57th minute, second-half substitute Nick Zimmerman headed the ball over the bar and, after Galindo fired wide on a counter in the 64th minute, Wolyniec had New York's best chance at the tying goal three minutes later.
The veteran forward stole an attempted back pass by Carey Talley and went in alone on Thornton. But the goalkeeper got a big hand out and pawed away Wolyniec's close range attempt.
Wolyniec headed another Oebster cross away in the 72nd minute and two minutes later Stammler collected a punched clearance by Thornton, but bounced the shot wide of the far post.
In the 77th minute, Zimmerman forced Thornton to dive to his left and parry away a well-struck free kick from 30 yards.
Carlos Johnson made his return to the lineup after breaking his foot against Houston three months ago, but he left the game at halftime with a lower back contusion, replaced by Danleigh Borman.
Juan Pablo Angel missed his second consecutive match with a concussion, Jorge Rojas was out with a right calf strain while Sinisa Ubiparipovic was suspended, serving a one-game ban after being sent off in a 4-0 loss to the Colorado Rapids on July 25.
With Johnson back in the lineup, Jeremy Hall switched to the left and started in place of Salvadoran international Alfredo Pacheco. Coundoul started in goal for the second time since joining the club.
Juan Carlos Osorio was forced to make an early substitution, bringing on Zimmerman for Albert Celades in the 35th minute. The 33-year-old Spanish midfielder suffered a right thigh contusion.
After bringing Borman on at the half, Osorio made his final change 10 minutes from full time as Matthew Mbuta replaced Luke Sassano.
Preki made his first adjustment on the hour mark with Lahoud replacing Chijindu, Lillingston came on for Galindo in the 73rd minute for his second substitution and Gerson Mayen replaced Bojan Stepanovic in the 87th minute for the final change of the game.
Chivas USA, who won their first match since June 6, will play host to Toronto FC next Saturday night at The Home Depot Center while the Red Bulls, which fell to 2-16-4, entertain FC Dallas on Sunday, Aug. 23 at 3 p.m.
