Who is the best direct free-kick taker in MLS?
From longtime league stalwarts like Brad Davis in Houston, to newcomers like Toronto FC’s Sebastian Giovinco, there’s no shortage of excellent direct free-kick takers in MLS.
But with the game on the line and the goal within range, which player would you most want to see step up to hit the shot?
We’ve put together a list of some of best direct free-kick takers in MLS. Davis and Giovinco join some of MLS’ most influential players, including Real Salt Lake’s Javier Morales, Portland’s Diego Valeri, Columbus Crew SC’s Federico Higuain and Sporting Kansas City’s Benny Feilhaber and Graham Zusi.
Also in the running are a couple of free-kick specialists: New England’s Chris Tierney and FC Dallas’s Michel. They might not play the same sort of role in the run of play, but these two can challenge anyone when it comes to going to goal from a direct free kick.
My personal favorite? That’d be RSL’s Morales. No one else in the league has scored from free kicks as consistently as the Argentine playmaker has over the years, and no one else has been as good at it this season.
