Philadelphia Union sign MLS pool goalkeeper Charlie Lyon amid injury crisis

The Philadelphia Union turned to the MLS goalkeepers pool on Friday to address an injury crisis, bringing in Charlie Lyon on a short-term basis to back up current starter Carlos Miguel Coronel.

Lyon, 27, played for LAFC last season and spent his first two seasons in MLS with the Seattle Sounders, though his 2019 contract option was declined and he most recently worked out with for Timbers 2, Portland's USL Championship side.

Philly have called on Lyon because of injuries to first-choice 'keeper Andre Blake and his understudy Matt Freese, the latter of whom had to exit Wednesday's 2-0 win over FC Cincinnati with an oblique problem.

Pool goalkeepers are available to MLS teams on an emergency basis when a team has fewer than two rostered 'keepers available for match action.
